After arriving at the Den in Nahantu inDiablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, you’ll be able to unlock four different Mercenaries who will aid you in battle. Raheir is unlocked by default, but to recruit the other three you’ll need to complete their special quests.
Varyana, the Berserker Crone, is a Mercenary with several abilities that focus on dealing high damage to groups of enemies while inflicting Bleeding. Below, we’ll take a look at how to complete the quest ‘Slayer’s Retribution’ to unlock Varyana as a Mercenary companion.
How To Start Slayer’s Retribution
You can begin this quest by interacting with theBrutal Note in the Den. This will add the quest to your log, but before you can actually start it, you’ll need toclear the Temple of Rot Stronghold, which is located to thenorth of the Jirandai Waypoint in Hawezar.
To clear this Stronghold, find and kill theCannibal Championsinside, then findMolqarth’s Lairand kill him. This boss has two phases, but doesn’t use any particularly dangerous attacks. After defeating Molqarth,rekindle the Wanderer’s Statueto complete the Stronghold.
How To Complete Slayer’s Retribution
After clearing the Temple of Rot Stronghold, head to itssouthern entranceand read theBlood-Scribed Sign. Now, travel back out of the Stronghold and search for theFetid Larder, which can be foundimmediately to the left of the entrance to the Stronghold.
Head inside the Fetid Larder, thenkill the cannibals inside. Next, free Varyana bydestroying the chain pillarsthat are holding her. She will then attack you, deal enough damage to her to get her to yield, then speak to her.
Leave the Fetid Larder, thenspeak to Varyana again. Now, you’ll need to help her get revenge on two Cannibal Chieftains. First is Grelkar -head northeast to the quest location. In this area, wander around until theHerald of Grelkarappears, then kill him to get theHand of Invitation. Now, head a short distance toGrelkar’s Feast Hall.
Inside the Feast Hall, kill Grelkar and his followers, thenburn the effigy to find Zolmog. Watch the cutscene, then exit the Feast Hall and speak to Varyana.
Next, travelnortheast to find a boat to get into Guulrhan, or use theFate’s Retreat Waypointand headsouthwesttowards the location. Move to theeastern part of the search locationto find the rowboat, then interact with it to enter theArena of Guulrhan.
Proceed through this Dungeon, killing the Cannibals that get in your way, until you reach the Cannibal Gate. Speak to Varyana, then destroy the gate and head inside to where Zolmog is. Watch the cutscene, thenkill Zolmog and his followers.
With that, the Slayer’s Retribution quest will be complete, and Varyana will be unlocked as a Mercenary. You can now recruit her as a Mercenary or Reinforcement by speaking to her in the Den.
