Black Myth: Wukongserves as a sequel to the acclaimed 16th century Chinese novel, Journey to the West, where a trio of former miscreants have to protect a monk during his travels. These three protectors are Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing.
While Black Myth: Wukong focuses heavily on the most popular character from the novel (made evident by the game’s title), it is still filled with references to all other characters. That is to say, all others except Sha Wujing, whose fate we are left to wonder about throughout the whole game.
Who Is Sha Wujing?
Sha Wujing was a prominent character in theJourney to the West novel, becomingthe third and final guardian of the Tang Monk.
While Wukong is a playful rebel and Zhu Bajie is constantly looking for female companionship,Sha Wujing is an already calm individualthat rarely causes any trouble.
This might not be evident when you look at him, since Sha Wujing is a towering man, with either gray or blue skin, and bright red hair and beard. He’s evendepicted as having a necklace made of the skulls of his victims, which is quite the menacing look when compared to a stick-wielding monkey or a pig that talks too much.
His dreadful appearance made Wukong and Zhu Bajie fight him before asking any questions, assuming he wanted to eat the Tang Monk like many other demons before him.
Turns out,Sha Wujing was as violent as his outlook might suggest, but a prior encounter with Guanyin (a bodhisattva mentioned in Chapter 1 of Black Myth: Wukong) had pushed him towards the road of redemption even before he met the Tang Monk.
This, in turn, makes himone of the least explored characters in the novel, since he has less to learn when compared to Wukong or Zhu Bajie.
Is Sha Wujing In Black Myth: Wukong?
No,Sha Wujing is nowhere to be found in Black Myth: Wukong. The game starts by giving players control of the titular monkey, and the main companion of the game is Zhu Bajie, but there is not a single clue as towhat happened to Sha Wujingall those years after the events of the novel.
All we do know is thathe isn’t at the Celestial Court, at least according to Yellowbrow during Chapter 3. There, he claims thatZhu Bajie and Sha Wujing are fugitives, and we can confirm this is the case for Zhu Bajie at least, since Yellowbrow has him captured within his domain.
There is avisual rendition of Sha Wujing during the animated cutscene ofthe True Ending, although that doesn’t reveal much.
That whole cutscene is a flashback, meaning that, even though Sha Wujing is technically shown,he is seen taking parts of events we already knew he was there for.
Can We Expect To See Sha Wujing In The Future?
We will likely see this popular character from the novel in the future, but itall depends on what the future of the Black Myth series entails.
If there is some form of DLC,Sha Wujing will likely play a role, either as an exciting boss or as a playable character. After all, he used techniques and weapons similar to his friend, Wukong.
There might also be a new Black Myth in the future withSha Wujing in the protagonist’s role. It would certainly make for an interesting adventure through more Chinese myths, and it could end with Sha Wujing meeting a liberated Wukong ready to take on the Celestial Palace once again.
