Summary
Star Wars has quite a few games, from old classics to new titles. However, few of them have had the same impact in recent years as the Star Wars Jedi series, with its beginning in 2019 when Fallen Order came out, and eventually with its sequel,Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, with both games offering an amazing Jedi Knight experience.
ThoughStar Wars Outlaws,is not about the Jedi fantasy, it still takes place in the same galaxy, and even their time period is close, which only made us wonder which of these games is more faithful to the franchise as a whole.
For the sake of avoiding repetition, we’ll address the games simply as Survivor and Outlaws going forward.
8Graphics
Tie
Lucky for us, both games look gorgeous. All the characters have great designs, everything looks quite realistic, and the alien species also look amazing, with some characters who have already been in movies looking like the real thing.
Both games also excel in the environment department, as all planets look breathtaking and full of life. you may easily get lost admiring each location and then get actually lost because the areas are big.
7Protagonist
Cal Kestis has a bit of an advantage here, as he was already established in Fallen Order, and we are already attached to him, while Kay Vess is a newcomer who has to prove herself. Though their personalities and journeys are vastly different, they both excel at what they do.
Kay offers a more carefree and reckless character — though she can be serious when needed. Cal, on the other hand, offers a more serious character as a hardened warrior who’s been fighting the good fight for a while now. Their respective voice actors,Humberly GonzálezandCameron Monaghan, also deliver their best here.
6Narrative
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Despite both protagonists being good at what they do, Survivor pulls ahead when it comes to the rest of its narrative. The side characters are more prominent, the events in the story are more impactful, and (most of) the baddies aren’t forgettable.
Outlaws, on the other hand, has a decent story but one that plays too safe. Its elements are all good but underdeveloped, where many characters aren’t properly explored, and when a character finally gets depth, such as the villain, the story is already wrapping up because the game is about to end. It’s also quite predictable.
5Combat
Outlaws has the same issue with combat as it does with its narrative: the combat is good but also underdeveloped. All the foundations work well and make the game fun, but after a few hours with minimal upgrades, you’ll feel like the core mechanics aren’t evolving.
Meanwhile, Survivor keeps coming up with new Force abilities that give you different dynamics to experience the fight, and the lightsaber stances change the game significantly, more so than Outlaw’s different blaster modules.
4Exploration
Exploration is the hardest detail to compare Survivor and Outlaws because, though they both do a great job with it, they have very different goals, so you’ll experience this part of each game differently.
Survivor is the better choice for a less casual type of exploration, where you have to find things out for yourself. It also has narrower locations with controls that excel at climbing and traversal. Outlaws is better with open spaces and roaming in said open spaces, and you can use intel you get from NPCs to figure out the location of points of interest. Both work well, though.
3Customization
When it comes to changing your character’s looks, Survivor is the clear winner. First, the gear doesn’t affect your character, which, while that is a fun aspect of Outlaws, Survivor gives you more freedom to equip yourself with whatever you want.
That said, there are a lot of options for your upper and lower body parts, as well as hairstyles, which Outlaws doesn’t offer. Survivor’s companion, BD-1, also has more customization than Outlaws' companion, Nix.
2Side Content
Star Wars Outlaws
Both games do a great job with side content, and while Survivor’s extra content tends to be better in the narrative department — if the content has a story aspect to it — Outlaws does better when it comes to its options and rewards.
Almost every side content in Outlaws comes with an upgrade, an expert that gives you access to more abilities orgear, which affects your statsrather than just being a cosmetic thing, among other options.
1Winner
If you’re a fan of Star Wars, both games are worth playing, as they’ll give you different experiences in this fantastic galaxy. Survivor gives you the Jedi experience, while Outlaws gives you the criminal experience, after all.
However, Survivor gives you one of the best Jedi experiences out there, while Outlaws gives you a good criminal experience but not much else. Outlaws fails to reach its full potential, striking at being good only.
