Long beforeUniVersuswas UniVersus, it was the Universal Fighting System. A trading card game to span all sorts of properties, it was originally a celebration of, and inspired by, fighting games, with you playing as a single character using attacks and blocks to deal damage.
While UniVersus has recently leaned more into anime, manga, and even Critical Role, the latest takes it back to its fighting roots. Tekken 8 is one of the best games of this year, and now it’s coming to UniVersus with two Clash decks based on mother and son Jun and Jin Kazama. Check out a few of the cards you’ll be able to play with when both decks launch on October 24.
Jin Clash Deck
LikeJin’s lengthy combos in the game, his deck is all about amassing a huge card pool to enhance the power of your attacks. Cards like Black Out and Breaking Step buff your attacks based on your card pool, while others like Over The Shoulder Reverse can turn your huge pool to slow down your opponents instead.
Of course, a deck all about the card pool also needs ways to build it up, which is where things like Jin’s Karate Training can come in handy to get you extra cards into your hand.
An interesting alternative strategy in this deck is buffing up a single attack to dish out massive damage. There are plenty of cards that will buff an attack if it has already been increased this turn, like Switch Blade, or ones that need you to have already dealt damage, like Ki-Charged Strike. You’ll still need a big card pool to have these fully pay off, but now the onus is on one attack doing the work, rather than a lengthy chain.

Jun Clash Deck
Jun’sClash deck serves an important role for UniVersus, as it gives the Order and Good symbols somemuch-needed punching and kicking toolsit’s been missing out on for a while. Between cards like Ayame, Izumo, and Tsukuyomi for attacks themselves, and buffs such as Kazama-Style Traditional Martial Arts Arts and A Kazama’s Power, those symbols should enjoy a lot of new tools.
In UniVersus, your decks are built around a character, and you can use cards as long as they share at least one symbol with them. So the Jun deck has cards that can be used in any Water, Order, or Good deck, while Jin’s can be used in Chaos, Good, or Evil.
Some cards will punish your opponent for having a large card pool, serving as a foil to Jin. Take Ayame, which has the relatively minor effect of drawing you a card if your opponent has anything in their pool. It’s not a lot, but card advantage is everything.
Meanwhile, Tsukuyomi in particular helps force through massive attacks you’ve spent a lot of resources buffing, by turning it into a Throw if your opponent has a face-down card in their pool. Throws deal half of their damage even if they’re blocked, so by boosting it big enough you could potentially give a proper whallop that your opponent can’t do much about.
