Nobuo Uematsu won’t be retiring from video game music after the release ofFantasian Neo Dimension. Avideo released by Fantasian’s English language accountled people to believe this was the case, as Uematsu is translated as saying “This is my final project as a composer of video game music.”
However, the legendary composer, best known for his extensive work on theFinal Fantasyseries, simply meant that he doesn’t want to compose entire soundtracks anymore. Uematsu expressed asimilar sentimentfollowing the release of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, saying that he “lacks the physical and mental strength” to keep composing entire soundtracks as the process takes years of concentration for every game.
Uematsu Isn’t Going Anywhere
In a subsequent statement posted on X, Uematsu clarified that he was not retiring. “Wait, wait, wait! Everybody calm down! There seems to be some misunderstanding, but I’m not retiring from video game music work,” the post reads. “I’m going to cut back a bit on my video game music work because I want to have more time to make the music I want to make. It would be difficult for me to take on the entire soundtrack of a video game because the time commitment would be too long, but I would like to continue to work on jobs such as one theme song.”
Uematsu has had a storied career, composing entire soundtracks for the first twelve Final Fantasy games, as well as other titles like Blue Dragon. He also created the main theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a wonderfully memorable piece of music. Uematsu is still working on Final Fantasy, having composed the main theme for Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, which, judging by his statements, appears to be the kind of work that Uematsu wants to do going forward.
Uematsu’s latest project is Fantasian Neo Dimension, an enhanced port of Fantasian set to release on Jun 01, 2025.
