Spoilers for Life is Strange: Double Exposure ahead. In the first two episodes of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, you may explore Max’s room, and uncover what became of her relationship with Chloeif they got together during the first game. Unfortunately, what you find is a breakup letter from Chloe, revealing that she and Max haven’t been together for a while. Thisquickly resulted in backlash from fans, prompting a response from Koch.
Michel Koch did not work on Double Exposure. His studio, Don’t Nod, developed the first two mainline entries, with Deck Nine developing the Before the Storm expansion, True Colors, and now Double Exposure.
Original Life Is Strange Creator Defends The Developers Of Double Exposure Against “Hateful” Messages
Koch also elaborated on his views in the replies. “You can be disappointed, you can want other narratives for those characters you love, or different stories,” says Koch. “But ultimately creation is hard and very subjective and if [Double Exposure’s] story does not please you, it does not erase what you imagined.”
However, in response to another fan, Koch suggested that this wasn’t the ending he envisioned for Max and Chloe either. “From what I read I think we would not have written things the same way,” he says. “But I felt the same with the comics and Before the Storm and I kind of accepted it. I’m pretty sure when I play the full game I won’t recognize my characters but that’s also inevitable with different writers.”
Replying to another fan, he adds that the original team avoided doing a sequel for this very reason - he wanted fans to be able to decide what happened to Max at the end of the game. However, with Double Exposure bringing her back, it’s possible that more about her life will be decided by the new devs, as they tell a new story with an older version of the character.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure’s first two episodes are out now. The full game launches on October 29.
