Summary

Life is Strange: Double Exposurehas a funny easter egg if you try and use Max’s old Rewind powers, which causes her to tell the player (or herself off) for not living in the present.

While most of the Life is Strange games following the one that started it all have introduced brand-new characters with unique powers,Double Exposure uniquely brings back everyone’s favourite photography nerd, Max Caufield. Interestingly, though, this version of Max isn’t the same as we left her and has grown up alotover the past decade.

Not only does Max have a full-time job as an artist-in-residence at a prestigious university, but she’s also moved on from the time-rewinding abilities she used in the first Life is Strange. While she does eventually get some brand new powers that become the game’s focal point, it’s clear that Deck Nine knew that veteran players would try and use Rewind.

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure Tells You Off For Trying To Rewind

If, like me, you’ve been playing Life is Strange for a long time, then your first instinct once you jump back into Max’s boots is to press the Rewind button and see what happens. Well, Double Exposure has a very good answer for that,as Max will actually talk to herself about no longer using her powers, both because she doesn’t want to and because they’ve stopped working.

Rewind hasn’t worked in years but still - old habits die hard. Come on, Max. Gotta focus on the here and now.

It’s a very cute way of acknowledging what it’s like to return to a character who hasn’t been playable for more than a decade, while also giving some context as to how her life has changed. In-universe, Max’s time-rewinding powers have been gone for a few years, but it seems that she’s taking some steps to live more in the present than rethinking her decisions.

Beyond just cutely referencing the old button placement for Rewind, Max’s loss of her abilities also plays into some key scenes in the game, with her occasionally trying to Rewind time out of instinct before correcting herself.Just like how the game handles Chloe and Max’s relationship, it’s a smart way of showing how things change and how life moves on.
