Metaphor: ReFantaziois extremely similar to Persona, which isn’t surprising since Persona director Katsura Hashino is the mastermind behind it. Thankfully, there’s enough in the game to set it apart and give the game its own identity, the fantasy setting being one of the biggest. There are also changes to familiar mechanics,such as the inability to fail Rank Up events.
Those hoping to give the game’s colorful cast of characters a smooch at some point will be disappointed too, as it was confirmed before the game’s launch that, unlike Persona,Metaphor: ReFantazio doesn’t include romance options. Katsura explains thatthe reason behind the lack of romance optionsin this particular game is due to the story, as you’re trying to become the ruler of a land rather than teenagers that naturally have romance in their lives.
Unfortunately, that explanation won’t help those that have been diving into Metaphor: ReFantazio over the weekend and meeting “some of Atlus' finest”.Those are the words of Twitter user Shinken_Oh, who is one of many fans playing Metaphor that are down bad for the game’s cast, wishing wholeheartedly that Atlus hadn’t decided against romance options in the development process.
Almost every member of the game’s cast has someone thirsting over them, though a very popular pick is Hulkenberg, the fiery-haired Roussainte that players encounter for the first time right at the start of the game. You won’t be surprised to know that Hulkenberg very swiftly becomes a party member, and has also as quickly made fans fall head over heels for her. For instance,take Twitter user EsemicolonR, who only just found out the game has no romance options and they “can’t have my knife-eared ginger wife”.

Thankfully, those that find themselves frustrated that they can’t wife up Hulkenberg have a fellow ally in the mighty fan artist. We already have art pouring in of the game’s characters, includingthis lovely piece by Reddit user Savadavaof the game’s protagonist and Hulkenberg in a loving little embrace, as well as dozens of fans going feral in the replies.
It’s not just Hulkenberg that fans are going feral for either,as Shinken_Oh is back once again, this time with a tweet thirsting over Brigitta, the owner of the Igniter store that players encounter at the beginning of the game. They’re not the only one either,as another Twitter user called Aaronatorr444took to social media to ask if “there’s a way to romance and marry this woman that I’ve met for 1 second”. Afraid not friend, you and the rest of the Metaphor fans will have to suffer through an Atlus game with no romances.
