Summary

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s protagonist has a customisable name just like most otherAtlusgames, but the default option in most parts of the world is “Will”.

One of the staples of Atlus' games is the specific way it handles its protagonists. Most of them are meant to be somewhat blank slates for the player to attach themselves to, which includes giving them a name that is used for text dialogue. That’s par for the course for most RPGs, but aninteresting twist is that almost all of them have a default canonical name.

For example,Persona 5’s Joker is canonically known as Ren Amamiya, whilePersona 3 Reload’s hero is Makoto Yuki. While Atlus' latest game,Metaphor: ReFantazio does do some things differently with its hero(including giving them fully-voiced lines for the first time), it too has a default name option for the protagonist.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Protagonist Is Called Will By Default

As confirmed by RPG Site, Metaphor: ReFantazio’s default player name can be revealed by changing some settings in the configuration menu. If you change your text language, then Metaphor will default the name for the player and protagonist’s name, which confirms what it’s supposed to be in Atlus' eyes.

For the player name, it simply defaults to “You”, which makes sense, but for the protagonist’s name, it’s changed to “Will” in English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, suggesting that it’s the overall default name for the hero. There are some variations, such as the Spanish release’s default name being “Victor”, but most of them point to it being Will.

By far my favourite of the bunch is the Portuguese default name, which is “Pedro”. A name fit for a ruler, to be sure.

All of this suggests that the official canonical name for the hero of Metaphor: ReFantazio is Will, although the second name is currently unknown. It’s not clear if Atlus is going to officially confirm this at any point, but it has previously revealed the names of its heroes in any manga or anime adaptations of its games.

That being said, it’s worth keeping in mind that there have been a few different interpretations of the names of Atlus protagonists in the past.Persona 3’s hero was referred to as Minato in the manga adaptation of the game, before being called Makoto in the anime adaptation and most over official media. For now, though, it looks like we can safely say Metaphor’s protagonist is called Will.
