Summary
A reliable insider has shared audience reactions from test screenings ofMortal Kombat 2that indicate Cole Young has a “much smaller role” than he did in the first movie.
Mortal Kombat is known for its massive roster of iconic characters, from obvious front-of-box picks like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang to long-term fan favourites like Johnny Cage, Raiden, and Sonya Blade. With that in mind, you’d think the 2021 moviewould have an easy time picking a hero to focus on and make the star of the show.
That wasn’t really the case, though. Instead of highlighting any of Mortal Kombat’s beloved fighters, the 2021 movie decided to create a brand-new character called Cole Youngand make him and his literal plot armour the focal point of the narrative. As you’re able to imagine, most fans weren’t particularly happy with a newcomer taking centre stage, especially one that most considered to be bland.
Cole Young Reportedly Has A Reduced Role In Mortal Kombat 2
While Cole Young has already been confirmed to be a part of Mortal Kombat 2, it seems that the heavy feedback towards him in the first movie has been taken on board. As pointed out by Redditor SpeedForce2022 on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, reliable movie insider DanielRPK recently shared a summary of some audience reactions to a test screening of Mortal Kombat 2.
According to DanielRPK, the reception to the long-awaited sequel is that it’s a “massive improvement” over the first movie that improves upon pretty much everything, from the fight scenes and gore to the characters and story. One of the most interesting reveals from the audience reactions, though, is that Cole Young has a “much smaller role” this time around.
Cole Young, the lead from the first film, has a much smaller role this time. Instead, Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana take center stage, and I hear they’re both fantastic. - DanielRPK
It seems like Karl Urban’s take on Johnny Cageand Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana are instead the main characters of the sequel, which makes a lot of sense considering how important the two are to Mortal Kombat as a whole. It’s not clear how Cole Young will play into Mortal Kombat 2 if he’s not the main character but his reduced focus is sure to be good news to anyone who didn’t gel with him in the first movie.
