Summary

A lot of news aboutMagic: The Gathering’s near and distant future was covered during this past weekend’s MagicCon, one of the most surprising announcements beingthe reveal of a SpongeBob SquarePants Secret Lair crossovercoming in 2025. Well, actually, despite how wacky it is, Wizards Of The Coast bringing Bikini Bottom to MTG might not have been all that surprising at all to some of you.

WithFortnite already a part of MTGand Marvel and Final Fantasy crossovers still to come thanks to Universes Beyond, some of you predicted something as weird as SpongeBob might be coming too. Twitter userd00mwake shared a mocked up imagejokingly predicting a SpongeBob Universes Beyond crossover was coming all the way back in August 2023. Impressive, but turns out someone not only beat them to it, but they predicted the Nickeolodeon mascot was coming to MTG before Universes Beyond had even begun.

comic strip joking about spongebob and iron man being added to MTG

In September 2020, weeks before MTG’s The Walking Dead crossover set was released which kicked off Universes Beyond,Cardboard Crack shared a comic stripjoking about what the TCG might become with Wizards opening the doors to crossovers. In the short comic, the player begins by informing their opponent that they have attacked with SpongeBob. An unknowing glimpse into MTG’s future more than four years ahead of time, and likely the wildest example the comic’s creator could think of at the time that they never believed would really come true.

SpongeBob’s MTG Crossover Was Predicted More Than Four Years Ago

Some Jokes Come True

SpongeBob wasn’t the only MTG crossover Cardboard Crack’s comic unknowingly foreshadowed in 2020. As the players go back and forth, the same player who attacked with SpongeBob later uses Iron Man’s repulsor blast. One of MTG’s next Universes Beyond crossovers will be with Marvel andamong the cards revealed for its Superdropare some Iron Man ones. Kylo Ren and Frozen’s Elsa are also mentioned in the comic and while they aren’t a part of MTG yet, you’d have to think with Marvel opening the Disney door, it’s only a matter of time.

Considering the Universes Beyond-heavy direction in which MTG is headed, I’d put money on there being a Star Wars set coming sooner rather than later. That’s ifthe reactions of long-time MTG fansdon’t make Wizards reconsider the direction in which it is taking MTG. Aside from the SpongeBob bombshell, one of the biggest reveals during MagicCon was that 50 percent of new sets will be Universes Beyond starting in 2025, and thatcrossover sets will be legal in all formats, two announcements that have not gone over well with a lot of players.
