Magic: The Gatheringhead designer Mark Rosewater has confirmed that everything launching in 2025 has now been announced, with no surprises coming later next year.
Rosewater revealed this in response to a fan onhis Tumblr blogwho complained that there are “Too many sets and cards to keep up with”, making the hobby far too expensive. They argued that Wizards of the Coast should go back to one Universes Beyond set per year, toning down the number of releases.
Rosewater replied, “One point I think has been missed is that 2025 has less overall product releases than 2024.
“Here’s what we’re releasing in 2025(and this is it, we announced everything):
That’s seven new product releases, six with new card designs (Innistrad Remastered is all reprints), and seven that are booster releases. That’s two less new releases, two less new products with new content, and one less new booster release.”
Despite there being fewer releases, there are a few caveats with this lineup. Two of the nine released in 2024 listed by Rosewater are Fallout and Assassin’s Creed, which are either Commander releases or mini-sets. Compare this to the six fully Standard-legal sets, complete with Commander decks, Special Guests, Headliners, and more, launching in 2025, and those seven sets start looking bigger than it first seems.
We Still Have One More Set To Close Out 2024
Wizards of the Coast just released Duskmourn, a ’70s and ’80s horror-inspired set with some… unsettling designs.It’s a huge leap from the more cutesy and wholesome Bloomburrow, like doing a double-bill of Paddington and Saw, but if you’re a bit put off, don’t worry. There’s still one more set this year.
Later this month, on November 15, we can expect to seethe new Foundations setwhich will be the bedrock of Standard until at least 2029, although it could last even longer. It combines reprints and new cards in the hopes of welcoming more players to the game, hence its Beginner Box and Starter Collection.
After that, we have all of the sets Rosewater mentioned for next year. But that doesn’t mean WotC is done with its big reveals: we still have one Universes Beyond set to be unveiled, and whatever’s releasing in 2026.
