Summary

Deck-building games are a dime a dozen these days. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good card shuffler, butthey’re edging closer and closer to’cozy' levels of oversatured. Thankfully, developer Gil Lawson is shaking things up a bit with Rogue Light Deck Builder.

It’d be fair to assume that this is aSlay the Spire-inspired indie, but you’d be wrong. It’s actually about building a deck in your garden with a hammer and some nails! Deck building, not deck-building, geddit?

“Your house needs a deck. You have a hammer. You have wood and you have nails. The light outside is faulty. You work, you earn. Freedom is $1,000,000,“the description reads. “Build a deck. Use your hammer. Drive the nails in. Scrimp and save. Freedom is just around the corner.

“Upgrade your hammer, your hand, your nails. Squash a bug. Upgrade the bug. Squash it again. Say it with me: ‘Freedom is just around the corner.’ Keep your streak alive. The light is blinking. Listen to your nails. Cash out. $1,000,000, remember? Step by step. Hit your hand. Ignore the pain. Just around the corner.”

Features Include: Achievements, Endless Mode, Leaderboards, Loving Husband

The screenshots give us a glimpse beyond the deck building, such as a store menu where you’re able to — as the description pointed out — upgrade your equipment and even bugs. You can make them more valuable to squish and easier to flatten. This menu also shows your cash, your “Perfect Nail Streak Counter” that seems to multiply your income, and two gameplay options: building the deck, or looking at your husband.

Your husband is nightmare fuel with a halo, and they talk like a stilted robot, but at least you’ve found love in this hellish world. “I am husband. We are improving home. You build the deck. You will get money,” he says in what I assume is a repeat of his wedding vows.

This bizarre indie game launches next year on March 4, if you fancy building a garden deck instead of a card one.
