Summary
A couple of days ago,Nintendoset the gaming landscape ablaze by announcing that it, along with The Pokemon Company, was suing Palworld developer Pocketpair. The two Japanese giants confirmed they were going after the indie developer due to Palworld infringing on “multiple patent rights.”
Pocketpair responded to the filingby saying that it would “begin the appropriate legal proceedings and investigations into the claims of patent infringement,“garnering support from long-time Palworld players.
Unfortunately for them, things aren’t looking good. An analyst toldGamesradar+that he thinks “this will end bad for Pocketpair.”
Nintendo Has A “Very, Very Strong Legal Team”
Analyst Serkan Toto told Gamesradar that “Nintendo is famously protective of its IP, and they have a very, very strong legal team that is feared in the Japanese gaming industry. You don’t want to make Nintendo angry,” adding, “Nintendo wanted to be absolutely thorough. They didn’t want to shoot from the hip.”
He intimated that the reason that the lawsuit took so long to come about was that Nintendo andThe Pokemon Companywanted to build a case that ensured they would win. “[They wanted to] make absolutely sure that everything is mapped out, that they have counter-arguments against anything that Pocketpair will say in court, and only if they are able to build a really strong case where they think they are going to win, they will file the lawsuit. And I think that Nintendo is going into this lawsuit thinking that they’re going to win,” Toto said.
I think that Nintendo is going into this lawsuit thinking that they’re going to win.
Things get even more concerning for the Palworld developers, with Toto adding, “I think they won every single one of them [Lawsuits],” and that “this will end bad for Pocketpair,”
WithPalworldnot having the time to prepare like Nintendo has, seemingly surprised by the lawsuit, saying, “We are unaware of the specific patents we are accused of infringing upon, and we have not been notified of such details,” they’re likely to face a tricky time ahead. And it’ll be morbidly fascinating to see how this shakes out.
Palworld
WHERE TO PLAY
Palworld has been described as Pokemon with guns and well, it’s hard to argue with that. The game is very similar in nature to the Pokemon formula, tasking you with catching and working with monsters called Pals. There are key differences, though. Palworld is rooted in multiplayer, oh, and, unlike Pokemon, its Pals have guns.
