A lot of rumours have been swirling about the next iteration of theNintendo Switch. From the name, to its features, and even what kind of games it will play, we’ve received no official details, except that it’s in the works, and that we’ll probably hear about it officially next year. Fans have been wondering what new innovation the company will showcase with the new console.
However, it seems thatNintendohas changed its mind and has dropped a major detail about the upcoming console. It seems that the “Switch 2” will be backwards compatible, meaning you’ll be able to play current Switch games on the next-gen console. That’s great, considering the current Switch has been out for so long, and has a massive catalogue.
A Switch To The Past
This information came out only a few hours ago, directly from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, who announced this feature on the company’s official Twitter account.
“This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch,” says the Tweet. “Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
So, it seems you’ll be able to play all the games that have been released for the Switch from 2017. That’s a lot of games, and is definitely the right move by Nintendo, as abandoning almost eight years' worth of titles would definitely not go down well with the fan base.
This announcement seemingly came at a very strategic time. We reported only yesterday thatNintendo Switch sales have dropped drasticallyfor the first half of the financial year 2025. The company has seen an overall 34 percent decline in sales, mostly due to fans waiting for the Switch 2. Perhaps this is Nintendo’s way of telling loyal fans to hold off on buying another Switch, as they’ll be able to play older titles on the next-gen console as well.
Nintendo Switch OLED
The Nintendo Switch OLED model enhances the graphical features of the original Switch and offers a bigger screen.
