Summary
No Man’s Skyis a game you could arguably spend your entire life playing. It’s a sprawling universe filled with countless planets impossible to explore entirely, and then you throw inthe game’s complex time sink that is base-building. Hello Games also hasa habit of dropping frequent free updates, filled with new things to do and see, so you could very easily fritter away thousands of hours in the blink of an eye.
That makes corrupted saves all the more devastating, as there are times in which unforeseen bugs, glitches, and technical errors could see a 1000-hour save file completely ruined. However, Hello Games seems to have made it a goal to make sure that no loyal player has their save file vanish if they can help it, as No Man’s Sky engine programmer Martin Griffithsrecently explained on Twitterthat the studio takes “extra time” to personally fix massive save files that are under threat.
As for why Hello Games actually devotes resources to this, Griffiths says that it’s all about loyalty, and that players that have spent so much time in the game “deserve the engineering fix”. It also helps that directly fixing these issues often “trickles down to all our future long term players”, so it sounds like it’s killing two birds with one stone.
No Man’s Sky Dev Personally Fixes Fan’s Broken 611-Hour Save
Griffiths says that the record length of a save file that has been saved is around 4,000 hours, but he shares one such save that’s currently being fixed. He explains that he was able to reproduce the issue affecting the fan’s save file, which was causing some severe flickering on almost every asset in the game. Griffiths then shares a video of the issue, which can be found embedded below.
Thankfully, Griffiths was able to discover the cause of the flickering and updates fans on the save file’s state bysharing another video of the same location, this time running nice and smoothly. He then goes on to explain that this issue has been popping up quite frequently, and taking the time to fix this one fan’s problem will help other affected Xbox users. At the very least, one No Man’s Sky fan’s over 600-hour save is saved.
