Summary
OneNo Man’s Skyplayer has managed to build a Mass Relay fromMass Effectin orbit of a planet, using over 2,900 parts. It’s an incredibly impressive feat that uses some equally as impressive trickery to work.
There are a few techniques to build bases in a planet’s atmosphere — YouTuberBeeblebumhas an entire video on the topic that goes into much more depth — but to give you a brief idea of how it works, I’ll break down the most commonly used method.
How To Build A Base In Orbit
Place a base computeron the ground and then save the game manually at your ship so that you can reload if something goes wrong. Then build 315 walls into the air and snap a landing pad to the top. Trigger an autosave by running around and reload the game via that autosave to see if the walls and, most importantly, the landing pad are still in place.
Afterwards, fly to the landing pad and build a second base computer — you can then place more walls and repeat the autosave trick to see your build limit. Once you’re ready, pick up the base computer and move it into the air. Doing this allows you to build in orbit, which results in some incredible creations like the Mass Relay pictured below.
What Is A Mass Relay?
For those who haven’t played Mass Effect but are still in awe at this build all the same, a Mass Relay is an enormous construct found in space that allows ships to instantly jump to other Relays on the same network. This connects the entire Milky Way galaxy, bringing together alien civilisations who would otherwise be too far apart to interact.
They were created by an extinct species known as the Protheans, but footage from two years agoshowed humans building their own.
One isn’t much use, but maybe we’ll see a whole network of them crop up across No Man’s Sky in wake of this viral post. Although, given how much work this probably took, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

WHERE TO PLAY
Lose yourself in a vast sci-fi odyssey as you explore a near-infinite, procedurally generated universe.
Set out from the edge of the Euclid galaxy and carve out your own interstellar existence in a vast universe teeming with life, danger and near-endless mystery.
No Man’s Sky is a hugely-ambitious, heavily-stylised, sci-fi adventure that spans entire galaxies all brought to life with procedural generation. Travel through an endless array of increasingly diverse and dangerous star systems, prospecting for rare materials, trading with alien life, populate planets and searching for clues to the meaning of the universe’s mysterious existence.
How you survive is up to you. Assemble entire fleets of dreadnought-class freighters and tear across the universe; build sprawling habitable bases across planet surfaces, beneath the ground or under the ocean; buy and upgrade your own weapons and star ships and do battle with outlaw space pirates, hostile alien fauna or the mysterious sentinel fleets.
The universe is yours to explore - trillions upon trillions of planets, waiting to be discovered.
