TheSilent Hill 2 Remakeis a recreation of one of the most iconic horror games of all time, and it comes with a lot of expectations as well. Completely redesigning all the graphics, many elements of the gameplay, and all the characters as well, this is a very different game from the original, and there has been a lot of discussion about it and whether it does justice to the Silent Hill series.
The most discussed element by far is about the characters and their redesigns, some of which have been controversial while others have been praised by fans. This article will rank all of them and tell you how good a job these redesigns have done.
5Maria
Undoubtedly, themost controversial character redesign in Silent Hill 2 is that of Maria, whose slightly explicit outfit and design have been reduced to be a lot more modern and sleek. While this design change has been criticized a lot by some fans, we don’t believe it is too bad, as Maria’s old outfit felt a bit outdated for current times.
If you’re not too big of a fan of the newer redesigns, then you cancheck out the many mods out there, some of which even allow you to use the character models from the original game.
Yet this redesign still ranks at the bottom of this list, as it is the biggest change from the original, andMaria doesn’t look like the same characterwithout her iconic dress, regardless of whether it may be a little too raunchy or outdated.
4Angela Orosco
Angela is another character that fans weren’t too sure about after she was first revealed in the trailer, but we feel the remake does a pretty good job of keeping her identity from the original while also making her look like a character from a newer game rather than something released in 2001.
A lot of people didn’t even realize that Angela is just 19 years of age in Silent Hill 2 due to how old her character and her face looks with the older graphics of the original game, and the Remake’s redesign actually makes her look like a young girl, and her expressions feel a lot more real.
3Laura
Laura’s character seems to be a great example ofhow a redesign should ideally be. She keeps her iconic striped tee and overalls combo, with the textures and the designs being a lot more prominent and well-defined due to the better graphics of the game.
Like all characters in the game, Laura’s facial features are also a lot better looking, and she actually looks like a kid now instead of the original, where her face is more like an adult’s. Her rude and bratty personality also comes across perfectly in this redesign, which is another reason we have ranked it so highly.
2Eddie Dombrowski
Eddie is one of the most unnerving charactersin Silent Hill 2, whether it be in the form of his personality or his unsettling looks, and the Silent Hill 2 Remake somehow manages to encapsulate this even better than the original game could.
Apart from the iconic outfit and looks of Eddie, which are graphical improvements over the original, one of the most widely praised aspects of his redesign has been his eyes, which look completely hollow and dead inside, which further helps to make his sinister personality stand out.
1James Sunderland
It was very important for the creators to nail the look of James, the main character of Silent Hill 2, and Bloober Team has done an incredible job of keeping the original design of the character and only making minimal changes that subtly improve his look.
Another thing that this redesign improves on is making James look a lot more unhinged, troubled, and older, which are all characteristics that make sense when you consider how he was at the lowest point of his life and going through a lot during the course of events of the game. Of course, not everyone is going to be satisfied with this ‘improved’ version of James, as it lacks the nostalgia factor, but we still think that he looks exactly what a modern and redesigned character should look like.
