Summary
PlayStationfinally lifted the lid on the open secret that is the PS5 Pro earlier today, giving us a first proper look at the consoleand a rundown of what it’s capable of. It certainly seems like an impressive (albeit pretty pointless) piece of tech, and a lot of people were poised before its announcement for a whopping hit to the wallet. However, PlayStation has undoubtedly dropped the ball.
Right at the end of the PS5 Pro’s announcement stream, it was revealed that the PS5 Pro will set you back an astonishing $700/£700m, a price that is now being mocked relentlessly on social media by angry PlayStation fans. Almost every single discussion you can find about the PS5 Pro is filled with players baffled as to how PlaySttion thinks it can get away with a pricey next-gen refresh despitehaving barely any games that will take advantage of it.
This post by Reddit user Turbostrider27(which you can find embedded above) on the PS5 subreddit is one prime example, racking up almost 10,000 comments at the time of writing, most of them extremely negative.
People like user JackAndrewThorne bemoan the lack of “outstanding first-party console exclusive games in the pipeline”, expressing their disappointment with PlayStation’s recent shift to live service games. Meanwhile, a lot of people are also furious about the fact thatthis is the price of the machine without a disc drive, such as Surfinginstyle, who criticizes the company for “not adding a disc and making people pay more.”
The PS5 Pro’s Reveal Trailer Already Has Over 100,000 Dislikes
In fact, you only need to go as far asthe PS5 Pro’s announcement trailerto find legions of angry fans, as the trailer is currently sat at a whopping 107,000 dislikes and growing. It’s also amassed a similarly massive amount of comments, most of them extremely negative and furious about the same things as those on Reddit.
For example, YouTube user @Tedakin sums up their feelings by commenting “700 dollars. No disc drive. No stand. Incredible”, while there are plenty worried that the PlayStation 6 will make things even more expensive, especially with the ongoing downfall of Xbox.
Thankfully, we still have Nintendo to go to for reasonably priced consoles, and you have a lot of people pointing outyou can actually buy several Switches for the price of one PS5 Pro and a disc drive. With the announcement of the Switch 2 just around the corner (a console that will actually have games), you have to feel like the negativity surrounding PlayStation now will only grow further.
