Summary
PlayStationhas had a pretty wild few weeks. After the failure of shutting down Concord, it managed to apologize to fans byreleasing an absolute banger with Astro Bot. Using that momentum, PlayStation decided that this was the time tofinally unveil the PS5 Pro, the fancy mid-gen refresh that promises more power and better looking games. Unfortunately,it made almost everybody mad by slapping a $700/£700 price tag on it.
PlayStation is apparently hoping to get people back on board though, as it’s now being reported by reliable industry insider Jeff Grubb that the company is holding a State of Play showcase later this month. In the latest episode of his Game Mess Mornings podcast, at the 28-minute mark, Grubb claims that PlayStation is gearing up to put on a State of Play in about “twelveish days.”
“I’ve said before that a State of Play is coming later this month,” says Grubb. “It’s probably coming in about, let’s say twelveish days. In about twelveish days, they will have a State of Play, not a showcase…”
From the date that this podcast went live, twelveish days means that State of Play will take place around September 24. Even though it sounds as though Grubb isn’t too certain about the exact date, he sounds pretty confident about one happening at the very least. It’s worth noting that Grubb has a pretty decent track record when it comes to PlayStation events, most notably leaking the date of May’s State of Play showcase earlier this year.
What Will PlayStation Show Off In The Next State Of Play
Now that it seems fairly certain a State of Play will take place soon, the question is now what will PlayStation announce? It very clearly needs to show off something to try and convince people that a PS5 Pro is actually needed, and we could see a nice sizzle reel of some existing titles that are PS5 Pro enhanced.
In terms of new games, PlayStation doesn’t have all that much on the horizon. Silent Hill 2 Remake will launch as a console exclusive, so we could see more of that, and you would expect to see some kind of first party title announcement. We could also get some fancy remasters of popular titles in an attempt to show off the PS5 Pro’s power, and we knowBloodborneandHollow Knight: Silksong fansare already getting the clown makeup ready.
It has been widely reported that this particular State of Playhas an internal codename of Royal, which fans are pointing to as proof this one may be bigger than previous shows. This claim is currently unsubstantiated though.
It’s worth keeping in mind that State of Play showcases have usually been smaller, and a little underwhelming, recently due to the company having so many games in early development, so we’ll have to wait and see whether it can deliver the goods this time around.
