Summary

PlayStationhas taken us on a wild rollercoaster ride over the past week and a half. It kicked things off by announcingConcord would be shutting downtwo weeks after its release, thenlaunched Astro Bot to rave reviews, and followed up on that byannouncing the PS5 Pro and revealing it’ll cost $700. On the bright side, the gaming community finally appears to be united on something - the PS5 Pro is too expensive. PlayStation has softened the blow somewhat by preparing a way to own aPS5for half that.

Shortly after the PS5 Pro presentation, listings for refurbished PS5s popped up at PlayStation Direct, spotted by Wario64. The refurbished base consoles aren’t available yet and their listings have had “coming soon” labels slapped on them for now. However, once they become available, you will be able to buy a PS5 directly from PlayStation for as little as $349.99.

The $350 PS5 is the base digital version, and if you want one with a disc drive it’ll cost $399.99. The other thing about the PS5 Pro that has upset quite a few people, although not as many people as the price, is the lack of a disc drive. Not just that the PS5 Pro is digital-only, but there isn’t an option to buy one with a disc drive built-in. If you want to play physical games on the PS5 Pro,you will need to buy the disc drive separately, adding another $80 to the price of the console.

You Don’t Need To Spend $700 To Join The Current-Gen

A Refurbished $350 PS5 Will Do Everything You Need It To, And It’ll Do It Really, Really Well

The $400 refurbished console comes with a disc drive built-in, meaning your collection of physicalPS4and PS5 games will not become obsolete if you buy one. The refurbished console listings are joined by three refurbishedDualSenselistings. Something else PlayStation did this week that ruffled customers' feathers, but already feels forgotten about thanks to the PS5 Pro announcement, wasupping the price of some of its DualSense controllers by $5. The refurbished controllers are $64.99, so $10 cheaper than what is now the standard price, and available in pink, purple, and grey camo.

Refurbished PS5

PlayStation has plans to sell refurbished base PS5 consoles very soon. The store pages are live but you can’t order them just yet. Both disc drive and digital-only versions will be available.

Amid the outrage over PlayStation charging $700 for the latest version of its newest console, the listings for refurbished PS5s appearing is a welcome reminder that the PS5 Pro isn’t for the average gamer. It’s not even for the above-average gamer. If you didn’t understand most of the tech language used during the presentation or couldn’t see/didn’t care about the negligible visual differences, the PS5 Pro wasn’t made for you. A base PS5 is still so far beyond perfectly fine and will play everything you want it to and look good doing it, and you’re able to join the current-gen for half the price it’ll cost to get a PS5 Pro.
