Summary
Pokemon Black and Whiteremakes have been rumored for some time now. Last summer, Pokemon fans theorized that we would be gettinga Legends-style version of the games, which later turned out to bePokemon Legends: Z-A, and earlier this year,The Pokemon Companybegan tweeting about the Unova-based games, leading fans to believeit was hinting at something.
While these rumors have yet to come to fruition, new trademarks for thePokemon TCGcouldbe the biggest hint yet that Pokemon Black and White will be stepping into the spotlight once again.
Are Pokemon Black And White Coming Back?
Over the weekend, three new trademarkspopped upfromNintendo, Creatures, andGame Freak. The first trademark likely bears no relation to Black and White. The filing is for a Japanese Pokemon TCG set called “Hot Air/Heat Wave Arena”, which doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with Gen 5, although if we did want to go full tinfoil hat, it could be a reference to Mistralton.
However, the other two set names are where things get interesting. Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak have trademarked “Black Bolt” and “White Flare”. Both clearly use the Black and White names from Generation 5 and are almost certainly connected to the game’s two major legendary Pokemon, Zekrom and Reshiram. Of course, these could simply be sets relating to the twoDragon-type Pokemon; however, having a set for each of them would be unusual, and the timing is particularly peculiar.
It’s worth noting, though, that The Pokemon Company doesn’t often set TCG themes around generational remakes. None ofPokemon Let’s Go,Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, or Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire received their own TCG sets. The last time this happened was with Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, back in 2009. Although 2022’s spin-off,Pokemon Legends: Arceus, did also have Astral Radiance introduce the game’s new characters and monsters.
I’m going back and forth in my head as to whether this actually means something for a remake, but for now, it’s all speculation and worth keeping an eye on.
What isn’t speculation, however, is the fact that, after a trademark for “The Glory of Team Rocket” appeared, The Pokemon Company teasedthe return of Team Rocket to the TCG.
