The last few years have been a bit of arough time for developers as a whole thanks to seemingly endless job losses and crunch, but a new problem has recently been rearing its head - data breaches. Back in 2022,Rockstar was hit with a massive hack that revealed the first footage of GTA 6, whileInsomniac Games had its whole pipeline unearthed late last year thanks to a similarly massive data breach.
Insomniac’s hack was such a big and notorious deal that you might have hoped that would be the end of it. That sadly isn’t the case, though,as Pokemon developer Game Freak also suffered a recent data breachthat has caused a bunch of unannounced Pokemon games and development files to be leaked.
Game Freak Shares Statement Regarding Pokemon Hack
While the hack has come as quite a surprise to nearly everyone, it seems that Game Freak has been aware of it for some time now and was even prepared for last night’s leaks.As highlighted by Twitter user Lewchube, the studio shared anofficial statement on its website earlier this week, predating the leaks being released by three days.
Twitter user OatmealDome translated the statement, which confirms that the “unauthorised access to our servers” actually took place some time ago in August of this year. The statement apologises to any employees who have been affected by the hack, and doesn’t actually focus on the content that’s been shared since it was released before the leaks started.
“Due to unauthorised access to our servers in August 2024, personal information on our employees was leaked. We apologise to those affected.”
In response to the hack, Game Freak says that it’s contacted any of the employees whose personal data was included in the data breach and confirmed that it’s “rebuilt and reinspected” its servers to prevent it from happening again in the future. Considering just how much Pokemon content has been shared from the leak, it seems likely that we’ll get another statement at some point next week.
