Summary

Imagine turning a singlePokémoncard into an engagement ring and an all-expenses-paid vacation? Well, that’s exactly what one Pokémon collector did when they turned a $400 card into nearly $8,000.

Meet u/lets-work-together, who shared on thePokeInvesting subreddit, a forum dedicated to investing in Pokémon cards, packs and collectibles, that they had obtaineda Gengar VMax Alt Art card for $400 raw, or ungraded, then were lucky enough to get a prestigious Beckett Black Label 10 rating on the card, only to go and sell it for $8,000 on eBay.

The collector shared their story on Reddit, andafter searching through eBay, we can confirm that this indeed just happened.

The Collector Is Using The Money For Good

While there’s a near infinite number of ways to spend nearly $8,000, the proud owner is using the money on something they can remember forever. “Buy (an) engagement ring and a nice vacation spot to (propose),”they wrote when asked of their plans. “I really wanted to keep the card for 20+ years, but my girlfriend deserves it.”

The reason why they wanted to keep the card for so long, besides the potential of it netting even more cash, is because they’re a Gengar collector.Per their Reddit profile, four months ago they set on a quest to obtain every Japanese Gengar.

Of course, it is important to note that the seller isn’t necessarily banking a full $8,000. There is the $400 they spent on obtaining the card, plus the cost it took to grade it, along with eBay selling fees.Per an eBay selling calculator, those fees could reach about $1,000. Still, profit is profit, and this investor clearly made good on their purchase.
