Summary
PlayStationcaused a stir for what feels like the 50th time in the last three weeks a few days agowhen it revealed the PS5 Pro. The mid-gen console will make a handful of games look a little bit better, and if you like the sound of that it’s going to cost you $700 to own one. Other than the price, the biggest hang-up for quite a few of you has been the PS5 Pro’s digital-only status. That revealled to an uptick in sales for PlayStation’s detachable disc drive, but perhaps not as significant an uptick as some were expecting.
The disc drive was amongAmazon’s top sellers following the PS5 Pro announcement which suggested one of two things, but likely a mix of both - that more people want a PS5 Pro than you might think, and scalpers are hoping more people want a PS5 Pro than you might think. Some of those scalpers might have already been scuppered though as despite that surge in disc drive sales, it is still incredibly easy to find and buy one at its regular retail price.
The disc drive is $79.99 when bought directly from PlayStation - where they are still in stock - as well as GameStop and Walmart where they are also still available. However, if you head to eBay,you won’t find any for less than $100. The prices resellers are asking for vary, with one listing as high as $238, and that’s before you add the $54 shipping since it’s being sold by someone in Japan.
Pretty much the only place the disc drive is currently sold out is the site that was at the center of the sales surge reports, and the first place most people check, Amazon.
The PS5’s Detachable Disc Drive Is Still Readily Available
Don’t Give In To Scalpers
Suffice to say, if you’re interested in buying a PlayStation disc drive, or you will be buying a PS5 Pro and have physical media you’d like to play on it, don’t panic and head directly to a resale site. Despite what you’ve read about the surge in sales, which is accurate, PlayStation and other big box retailers still have the disc drive in stock for $80. There is no need to pay double, even triple the price for one, at least not yet.
Disc Drive For PS5
PlayStation’s detachable disc drive has been created for those with a digital-only console who have physical media they’d like to use on the platform. However, it is only compatible with the slimmer model of the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro.
Between how hard they were to buy at launch and prices going up instead of down during its first four years, if you’ve been waiting to buy aPS5, there is a silver lining to the $700 PS5 Pro announcement. Shortly after its presentation,PlayStation added refurbished PS5 optionsto Direct. $400 for a base PS5 with a disc drive, and $350 for a digital-only console. The listings haven’t gone live yet, but the store pages are up so keep an eye on them.
