Summary
Silent Hill 2’s remake progressively makes James Sunderland more dirty and tired throughout the game, including giving him grubby fingernails and big bags under his eyes.
Now that we know theSilent Hill 2 remake is actually quite good and can all stop holding our breath, fans have started noticingall of the little details that Bloober Team has added to its take on the horror classic. One of the most interesting that’s been spotted (and later highlighted by Bloober itself) so far is how the remake treats its protagonist, James Sunderland.
Ignoring the silly Dog and UFO endings, James' trip to Silent Hill is absolute hell and sees him dealing with nightmarish creatures, foggy vistas holding even more terror, and even toilets filled with you-know-what. As you can imagine, it’s not the happiest game in the world, and that actually gets reflected by James' appearance.
James Sunderand, You Look Like Hell
Earlier this week, Bloober Team and Konami celebrated the launch of Silent Hill 2 by releasing developer diaries that delve into how the game was made. One of them focuses on James Sunderlandand how Bloober expanded on the idea of an “ordinary man pushed into extraordinary situations”.
As spotted by Twitter user BadHumans, one of the ways that Bloober has done this is by making James look dirtier and more tired the further you get into the game. You can see in the images above that James goes from being relatively fresh-faced to seeming as if he’s just pulled five all-nighters in a row, which is something that wasn’t included in the original game.
To be fair, you’d look that traumatised too if you had to reach into a poo-filled toilet.
It’s not just James' face that gets dirty, though, as the developer diary reveals that his clothes will also become more worn and he’ll start growing a little bit of a beard by the time everything wraps up.Twitter user hyxkkimxru pointed out that James' fingernails even get dirtyas the game progresses, which is a great bit of detail.
