What’s The Proof?
As broken down byFandom, players have been trying to work out where the titular town is located since 1999. Original instruction manuals confirmed that Silent Hill takes place in New England, but there’s never been outright confirmation in one of the games regarding which of the six states specifically Silent Hill can be found in.
Interestingly, the movie places Silent Hill in West Virginia.
The Double under Dusk comic, illustrated byPyramid Head creator Masahiro Itoand penned by original scenario writer Hiroyuki Owaku, has two protagonists from Maine, the liner notes for Silent Hill 4: The Room’s soundtrack gives the Heaven’s Night Club a Maine address, official Konami posters say Lakeview Hotel is in Maine, and the bus in Downpour has a Maine license plate.
There’s always been a mountain of evidence, but never a sign smack bang in the middle of a Silent Hill game that outright says “Maine”.
Prominent leaker Dusk Golem shared a screenshot of a newspaper dispenser that says, “Maine News - Take One”. It’s the first in-game confirmation in 25 years that Silent Hill does in fact take place in the Pine Tree State, putting the debate to bed at long last.
It makes complete sense giventhe numerous Stephen King inspirations, as most of his work is set in Maine since he was born in Portland. There are direct homages across the Silent Hill series to his body of work from Carrie and Pet Sematary posters to Redrum graffiti and Bachman Road (Richard Bachman being King’s secret pen name from the ’70s to ’80s).
So, when the game launches out of advanced access tomorrow, you can enjoy knowing that you’re really, undeniably in Maine.
