Summary
Silent Hill 2is a game all about mystery, with a hefty helping of spookiness and depression thrown in there for good measure. After receiving a letter from his thought-to-be-dead wife, James Sunderland journeys to the small town of Silent Hill (which was recently confirmed to be in Maine) to find out exactly what’s going on. By the end, you’re left with far more questions than answers, including about Mary’s whereabouts.
If you’re planning to play Silent Hill 2 for the first time with this recently released remake, and you’re somehow still not spoiled on a game that’s 25 years old, you may want to duck out now.
Of course, if you’ve played the originalSilent Hill 2, you’ll know that the whereabouts of Mary is explained throughout the game. You find out that James killed Mary himself, and that the entire town of Silent Hill and the monsters within are actually manifestations of his guilty conscience. Pretty scary stuff, but that still doesn’t give us the answer to where Mary’s body is.
There have been plenty of theories over the years, but one that appears to be fairly well agreed upon among the community is that Mary’s corpse is actually in James' car at the beginning of the game, and James drove to Silent Hill a short while after killing her. Her body’s exact location in the carhas been a great source of debate, with not evencomments from Masahiro Ito himselfstopping arguments about whether her body is in the trunk or the back seat.
Silent Hill 2 Remake Lets Players Find Mary’s Body
The simple solution to this problem would be to check the back seat of James' car, but that was unfortunately never an option due to the technical limitations of the PS2. Thankfully,we now have an excellent, beautifully detailed Silent Hill 2 Remake, andTwitter user Steven_VP1went straight to the car at the start of the game to check the theory. It’s time for you back seat believers to put on your best “I told you so” smiles.
While we don’t actually see a body in James' car, the screenshot that Steven_VP1 shares shows us a blanket with something relatively large hiding underneath. It doesn’t look all that body-shaped, but it’s also worth noting that it would need to look fairly innocuous to avoid potentially spoiling things for first time players right out the gate. At the very least, this should give fans enough ammunition to shut down the “trunk vs back seat” debate once and for all.
