Konami has revealed thatSilent Hill 2 Remakesurpassed one million sales in just three days, making it the fastest-selling game in the series' history.
It’s an impressive achievement, especially considering how the originalSilent Hill 2performed. Contrary to popular belief, it was not a runaway success. It took a month to reach one million sales (the final numbers have still not been revealed), and Pyramid Head creator Masahiro Ito even said that the disappointing start led to the smaller budget and development time for Silent Hill 3, which was originally conceived as an “arcade spin-off / rail shooter.”
“Silent Hill 2 took soooo long time [sic] to be somewhat popular,“Ito tweeted in 2019. “Many peoplelike Pyramid Headbut most of them don’t know SH2.”
How The Remake Shapes Up To The Rest Of The Series
From the sales figures we do have, we know that the original Silent Hill sold at least two million copies. Silent Hill 2 Remake came halfway to making the same breakthrough in under a week.
Silent Hill 3 peformed significantly worse than its predecessors. The final numbers are likely higher, but it only sold 300,000 copies in its first six months. We don’t know how well Silent Hill 4: The Room sold, either, but it was the number one best-selling game in the Japanese charts in June, 2004. However, that’s not as impressive as it sounds, as it only sold 41,000 units to earn that spot (as reported byGamesIndustry.biz).
Konamirevealed in 2018 that the series as a whole had only sold overnine million unitssince 1999.Resident Evil, by comparison, has soldover 160 million units. Silent Hill 2 Remake already accounts for ten percent of all Silent Hill sales. Really puts it into perspective, eh?
