Summary
As previously promised,Sonic X Shadow Generationshas changed a lot of the original game’s dialogue, although fans are mixed on some of the final results.
Although the centrepiece and focus ofSonicX Shadow Generations is, of course, the brand-new story campaign for Shadow the Hedgehog, Sega has also made a fair few changes to Sonic Generations. Not only has it added a drop dash and updated the game’s visuals, but it’s also changed some of the dialogue in cutscenes.
Before Sonic X Shadow Generations launched, Sega revealed that Ian Flynn, who wrote most of Sonic Frontiers and the Archie comics, wasbeing brought on to adjust the original game’s script and make some changes to it. Now that the Sonic Generations re-release is out, we finally know how much was changed, and fans are a little mixed on it overall.
As chronicled by YouTuber Shadiochao, the new cutscenes for Sonic Generations feature a surprising amount of dialogue changes, both minor and major. A lot of the script rewrites make it so that Sonic and his friends are a little less mean to each other, such as Knuckles no longer fat-shaming Classic Sonic, Amy not shoving Knuckles, and Classic Robotnik no longer asking if he’ll get as “crazy” as current Eggman.
Even though the dialogue has been updated for most of the friend interactions, the animations remain the same. That means Classic Sonic still looks at his stomach sadly when talking to Knuckles, which is very funny.
The dialogue changes also reduce how confused Sonic and Tails are when they find themselves in an area from their past, as they now basically recognise every location instead of somehow forgetting their past or suggesting that it’s a vague memory. For example, Tails now says, “This is definitely the Chemical Plant” rather than saying it’s “familiar”.
While some fans think that the changes are at best harmless and at worst a little off, some fans aren’t happy with the “modern and weird” dialogue and character changes. In thecomments section of another video highlighting the changes, one fan says that they appreciate the changes made to characters so that they remember their past, but thatothers such as the Knuckles interaction feel “unnecessary” and “horrible”.
