Sonic the Hedgehogisn’t a series that’s typically associated with the 8-bit era of video games since the Blue Blur didn’t make his debut until 1991 on the 16-bit Sega Genesis. There was a lesser-known, slightly altered 8-bit version of that game released on the Master System and Game Gear that same year though, and now Sonic, as well as Tails and Knuckles who didn’t debut in the series until Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, respectively, have their own 8-bitFunko Pops.

It really doesn’t matter whether Sonic had ever been 8-bit or not as Funko has been welcoming characters into its 8-bit collection regardless of whether they starred in a 1980s video game. Even though the 8-bit Pops can only be pre-ordered for now, all of them areexpected to ship on July 29, 2025, which means they’ll be here well before the holidays.Each figure is between 3.5 and four inches tall, and even though their designs are based on an era of gaming when everything was in two dimensions, the Pops are not flat.

Sonic’s 8-bit Pops have come during a very busy year for the series' Funko Pops. Speaking of which, Target has also received a flocked version of another recent Sonic Pop.New Sonic and Shadow figures were revealed last month, each of which comes with its own Chao Bitty Pop. Target now hasa flocked version of the Sonic Pop, and the Hero Chao Bitty Pop it comes with is flocked too. Just like the new 8-bit figures,Target is currently the only place you can buy Sonic and his flocked Chao pal.

Funko has given a lot of characters 8-bit makeovers, and considering Sonic’s origins, it was only a matter of time until the Blue Blur joined Funko’s 8-bit club. Sonic’s retro gaming Pop is exclusively available at Target.

8-Bit Tails Funko Pop

Even though Funko’s 8-bit range hasn’t exclusively been reserved for video game characters, it took them long enough to make Sonic characters a part of it. Tails was one of three Sonic characters to get the 8-bit treatment and the Pop is exclusively available at Target.

8-Bit Knuckles Funko Pop

Funko took its time adding Sonic characters to its 8-bit Funko Pop range, but when it did, it made sure to include all three of the series' core heroes in one fell swoop. Joining Sonic and Tails in Sonic’s first 8-bit Pop drop is Knuckles, looking a way he has never looked in the games.

Funko has cranked up its Sonic Pop output this month as it has been a very busy year for the world’s most famous hedgehog and the main events are now right around the corner. On October 25,Sonic x Shadow Generations, a remaster of Sonic Generations with brand new Shadow content added to the mix, will be released. Then after that, the Shadow love continues when the black and red hedgehog makes his debut inSonic the Hedgehog 3, coming to theaters this December.
