Sonic X Shadow Generationsadds an entirely new campaign where you play as Shadow. While the basic gameplay is the same, he gets some new abilities throughout the story, giving him more to play around with than the Blue Blur.

Of course, this means you’ll be forced to learn some new mechanics and figure out how best to use them. In this guide, we’ll go over all of Shadow’s new Doom Powers and what you can use them for.

Chaos Control

This will be familiar to any Sonic fan. Chaos Control has been Shadow’s signature ability since his debut inSonic Adventure 2, so it’s no surprise that it’s made a return for Sonic X Shadow Generations.

You can use this to freeze time. This means that stage hazards and enemies freeze, letting you get by particularly dangerous areas. However, it can sometimes be used to take shortcuts. These shortcuts will be clearly indicated on the screen by green sparkles if you pass one.

To use Chaos Control, you need tofill up the gauge at the bottom of the screen by defeating enemies. For the most part, you can use it whenever you want, but there are a few moments throughout the game where you need to use it to progress. The game makes this very clear, prompting you to activate it when it’s necessary.

Doom Spears

In Sonic Generations, Shadow uses Doom Spears against us when we fight him as Sonic. Now, we can use them ourselves.

This projectile attacklocks onto targets automatically. To use it, hold the relevant button to activate them, and wait for it to target enemies. Itcan target up to five enemiesat a time. A handy way to use this is to lock on to enemies that block your path, since this stuns them, making them unable to attack you as you get closer.

Shadow launches an enemy into the sky, and is choosing which direction to kick them in in Shadow Generations.

There are a few times when theDoom Spears can also be used to activate switches. If you think you’re stuck, use this projectile, as it might turn out there’s a switch you can’t see that needs to be pressed in order to proceed.

Doom Blast

Doom Blast ismuch more situational than the other abilitieswe’ve gone over. Whereas the others can be deployed whenever you want, and are occasionally necessary for progression, Doom Blast only works on certain enemies when absolutely needed to get through a stage, or through the hub area.

When you’re prompted to use Doom Blast, you’re able to launch an enemy into the air. From here, you have some time tochoose which direction you want to launch the enemy in. You’ll then teleport to the enemy, so the move can be used to cover great distances you wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach.

You’ll also use Doom Blast in a boss fight. Here, you’ll be prompted to launch the boss into hazards, so they take damage. But for the most part, you’reusing it for specific platforming segments.

Doom Surf

Another very situational ability, but one that grants you more freedom. Thislets Shadow traverse across water, unlocking new parts of the hub area, as well as being used in some stages.

Doom Surf kicks in automaticallyas soon as you walk or jump into a body of water. So, don’t worry about activating it beforehand - unlike Sonic, Shadow doesn’t risk drowning.

Doom Morph

Doom Morph unlocks new areas by letting you traverse parts of the map that you couldn’t before. In the hub area, this means beingable to swim in the corruptionthat otherwise slows you down.

It also lets youtraverse across corruption on the walls, so keep an eye out for new areas you couldn’t reach before.

You can only activate Doom Morph by homing into special morph balls. Once you do this, you can safely swim across the corruption. You can alsograpple on morph balls while already in Doom Morphto reach areas you couldn’t otherwise. By releasing at the right time, you can also choose the angle you’re launched at from morph balls.

Doom Wing

As the final ability, you’re only unlocking this towards the end of the game. However, once you do, it unlocks a completely new way to get through a stage as Shadow.

This comes into play in the final level. You can choose whether to use the wings or not, but it does make for a nice change of pace, andgives you new ways to get through the stage.

Once you’ve unlocked Doom Wing, you can go back and use it on previous stages too.

You’llneed at least 50 ringsbefore you may activate the ability. Once you can, Shadow can stay in the air longer, meaning you can take new paths and make longer jumps. You’ll also use it in the final boss, a bit like how Sonic becomes Super Sonic in the final boss of his own story. It willcontinually drain your Rings while in use, so keep a close eye on them.
