Shadow Steals The Show In Sonic X Shadow Generations

In my review for TheGamer, I gave Sonic X Shadow Generations a 4/5. I praised Shadow’s new levels and the new abilities that separate him from Sonic. However, I hoped thatSegawould instead focus on the future of the series, wishing that this was a full Shadow game, rather than a campaign added onto a remaster.

Matt Karoglou fromGame Rantwent higher, giving the game a 9/10, and praising the amount of content included in this release.

“Even in a post-Astro Bot world, Sonic X Shadow Generations serves as an epic reminder of how untouchable both Sonic and Sega can be when they’re firing on all cylinders,” the review reads. “Its treasure trove of content and top-notch presentation make it an easy recommendation, regardless of it not being a blemish-free experience.”

Chris Scullion fromVGCgave Sonic X Shadow Generations an 8/10, praising both Shadow’s campaign, and the improvements made to Sonic Generations in its remaster.

“Sonic X Shadows Generations delivers a sturdy one-two punch of fan service, providing a solid remaster of a 2011 favourite and coupling it with a new game starring a fan favourite,” he writes. “The usual 3D Sonic platforming issues remain and the Shadow Generations open-world hub may annoy those who disliked Sonic Frontiers but overall it’s a brilliant package.”

Writing forEurogamer, Ed Nightingale gave the game a 3/5. Similar to other reviews, he commends the new Shadow content but takes issue with the remaster of Sonic Generations.

“It’s so dated, it’s surprising Sega combined the two campaigns into such an inconsistent package: a reminder of an infuriating past next to a future that seems so sublime, even if purely by juxtaposition,” the review reads. “With this two-in-one approach, Sonic Team has simultaneously shot itself in the foot with an unnecessary look backwards and proven how far it’s come in the past 13 years.”

Sonic X Shadow Generations launches on October 25, but anyone who pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe edition of the game can start playing tomorrow. It will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
