Summary
By now you’ve probably heard the news thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel toInsomniac’soriginalMarvel’s Spider-Man, willnot be receiving any additional story-related content or post-launch DLC.
The news of Spider-Man 2’s finality came on the back of the announcement that the game would be coming to PC in late January 2025. Insomniacconfirmed the details in a separate post on the PlayStation Blog, dashing any remaining hopes that fans had of the game’s remaining plot lines and teasers being resolved.
As expected, Spider-Man fans were less than enthused about the news.Taking to the Spider-Man subreddit, many shared their thoughtson what they feel was ultimately an incomplete experience.
In one thread, a fan noted that it isn’t even about the story-related content, but the fact that there were fewer post-launch DLC costumes, among other support updates. One fan added, “Yeah, this game made me really concerned for Spider-Man 3. If I do decide to get it or Wolverine, I’m probably just going to wait for a sale and look a little more into gameplay and story videos than I did for SM2 instead of pre-ordering again.”
Indeed, the eventual Spider-Man 3 will have a lot of storylines to weave through, including Cindy Moon AKA Silk. Another fan chimed in,adding, “I could forgive the lack of post-game content if the story was really strong. But….yeah.”
The Idea For DLC Wasn’t Made Up
It’s important to note that DLC hopes weren’t some made-up construct. As part of the massive Insomniac leak, DLC for Spider-Man 2 was revealed to be in the works.
Not only was DLC in the works, but an actual content roadmap was unearthed. That road map had three separate DLC storylines, including ones centered on The Beetle, Carnage and the Spider-Verse. Additional suits and Spider-Bots were also seemingly part of those plans that no longer exist.
And as we noted in Friday’s report, actual concept art for The Beetle was leaked, along with missions and enemy types. In other words, the DLC was far more than a tease, but an actual in-the-works project. At this point, it’s unclear exactly why those plans were scrapped and what will become of that content, if anything at all.
But as one fan noted, the real gut punch is the overall silence. “Yeah, the lack of communication is what was really annoying. We just wanted to know, man. The least they could do was not take a year to tell us they’re not working on the game anymore.” Well, Insomniac finally has, and with that Spider-Man 2’s journey is finished.
