Summary

TheStarCraftseries is back, kind of. Yesterday, it was revealed thatStarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2 are coming to Xbox Game Pass this November, finally giving the series some life years after its last new instalment.

Now, it turns out there may be a reason for this surprise port. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the StarCraft series is “not dead”, and a new shooter set in the series is in development. This would be the third attempt to get a StarCraft shooter off the ground, with two similar titles being cancelled byBlizzardin the past.

As spotted byGamesRadar, Schreier revealed this on IGN’s Unlocked podcast. Here, he said that while he was working on his book about Activision Blizzard, Play Nice, he became aware of the StarCraft shooter’s existence, and is confident that it’s still in development.

“Yes, that is a project that, as far as I know, is in development, or at least, as of the time that I wrote this book,” says Schreier. “StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.”

However, when the topic of the shooter was first raised, Schreier reminded us to temper our expectations. “If it’s not cancelled, I mean,” he laughs. “This is Blizzard, after all, and their history with StarCraft shooters is not good”.

If this is still in development, Schreier says that its development is being led by Dan Hay, who previously worked on the Far Cry series.

Previous Attempts To Develop A StarCraft Shooter Have Not Ended Well

Longtime StarCraft fans will be familiar withthe game StarCraft: Ghost, which was supposed to be a stealth-action game. This was revealed in 2002, but after being delayed and put on hold, Blizzard finally revealed that it had been scrapped in 2014.

After that, it was reported that Blizzard started work on a StarCraft first-person shooter, butcancelled it in 2019 to focus on the development of Overwatch 2.

Now, as Blizzard hasscrapped yet another project, it’s possible that resources have been freed up to try and make a StarCraft shooter work again. It remains to be seen if this fares better than the other attempts.
