Summary

Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the most popular games onSteam Deck, is no longer compatible with the platform following an update byRockstar.

The addition of BattlEye anti-cheat to Grand Theft Auto 5 to combat cheaters in GTA Online has inadvertently made the game incompatible with Steam Deck’s Linux operating system. This is similar to the situations surrounding Fortnite and Roblox, two games which aren’t compatible with the Steam Deck because of anti-cheat issues.

In this case, Rockstar claims that the Steam Deck doesn’t support BattlEye and blames Valve for the issue. As pointed out byThe Verge, this isn’t the case. BattlEye anti-cheat is enabled on Steam Deck for DayZ, Arma, Planetside and Unturned among other games. Neither Rockstar nor Valve has commented on this apparent contradiction.

You can still play Grand Theft Auto 5’s wonderful single-player mode, but GTA Online will be inaccessible to Steam Deck Users. It’s 2013 all over again for our friends on the Steam Deck.

Steam is Offering Refunds

Steam is now offering refunds to GTA V players who play on Steam Deck as a big chunk of the game is now inaccessible to these players. An example of one of these refunds has beenposted on social media, with a typical Valve response that doesn’t give too much away.

“Thank you for contacting Steam Support. We totally understand the situation. We’ve refunded your purchase,” the response reads.

As for Rockstar, despite rumours that Grand Theft Auto 6 had been internally delayed, the studio’s parent company Take-Two has reported that GTA 6 isintended to release in the “Fall of 2025,“which is on schedule.

However, every Rockstar game since Grand Theft Auto 3 has been delayed so the studio releasing a game without delay would certainly be bucking a trend.
