The unique turn-based combat is a big part of what makes playing throughMetaphor: ReFantazio’s story so enjoyable, and most of the best battles in the game are the bosses. With bounties, side quests, and the extended main story, there are plenty of different bosses you’ll encounter before reaching the credits of the game.
Whether it’s horrifying human abominations, the various contenders for their throne, or dangerous beasts that are causing havoc around the kingdom, there is no shortage of options for the best boss in the game. Out of all the bosses, which has the most interesting design, story relevance, and highest difficulty?
7Greatworm Homo Butera
Get To Know This Boss Inside And Out
A recurring enemy throughout the length of Metaphor: ReFantazio is the Greatworm Homo Butera. You’ll first run into this mutated human sandworm on your way to the caves outside Martira, and the beast will ambush the party before they have any chance to escape.
Before you’re able to take it down for good, in a last ditch effort, the hulking worm will devour your entire party, and you’ll have limited time to work through the grotesque mini-dungeon inside before escaping its ‘back exit’. However, you’ll get a chance to actually defeat the beast if you manage to reach farenough into Bardon’s bond story.
6Sea Horror Homo Sabara
Not So Smooth Sailing
During the showcase for the first stage of the competition for the crown, Santifex Forden claims to have defeated the sea monster plaguing the waters of Brilehaven, that was stopping the residents from being able to fish.
However, upon sailing with the party toreach the Virga Islands, you’ll quickly realize that the monster Forden presented was a fake when your overseas adventure is rudely interrupted by the real monster. The seabound demon will bring the Gauntlet Runner to a complete halt, forcing the party to take down each of its tentacles before aiming for it’s disturbingly detailed face.
5Homo Gorleo
Apple’s Rotten Right To The Core
Serving both as your first real challenge, as well as an example of the destructive and deadly power of the humans, Homo Gorleo manages to wipe out an entire military training facility (a planned scheme by Louis to fearmonger in the capital), with Grius being the only survivor.
With the freshly awakenedpower of the Seeker archetype, the protagonist can defeat this bird-like, apple-munching menace. However, this creature will reappear in different forms a couple of times throughout the rest of the story, but your first threatening encounter with it is by far the most impactful.
4Melancholia Zorba
The Necromancer Is Back From The Dead
Zorba is the first properly threatening main antagonist you’ll face throughout Metaphor: ReFantazio, acting on behalf of his leader, Louis. The half-clemar, half-mustari is displayed as a powerful force at the start of the game, and later in the story, it is revealed that the unhinged Louis loyalist managed to survive his supposed death after your first encounter.
Serving as the last significant boss you’ll have to beat before reaching Louis, Melancholia Zorba has intentionally mutated his body to become a partially human monster, capable of manipulating his bones to act as a shield. He’s a much harder challenge than your first encounter, making him a much more memorable villain within the game’s grander story.
3Homo Avades
Cracking Boss
Soon after your early-game encounter with Zorba ends, it’s revealed that the giant human corpse that Louis dumped in the middle of Grand Trad has been revived and is now causing havoc. Luckily your party is nearby and ready to face off against the surreal, egg-like beast.
The giant form of this monster is part of what makes it such a detailed and engaging foe to battle with, and throughout the encounter, you’ll need to exploit the different weaknesses of each of its parts, while also defending against its varied pool of powerful attacks.
2Homo Jaluzo
Playtime’s Over
Despite appearing relatively early in the story, Homo Jaluzo is one of the most memorably threatening encounters you’ll have to survive. The looming shadow of the creature lurks throughout the dungeon it resides in, and you quickly surmise that this beast has been eating the kidnapped children of Martira.
By the time you reach the real battle with this infantile beast, you’ll have a horrifying image of it built up in your head, and the unnerving reveal of its twisted baby-like appearance doesn’t disappoint. It’s not that tricky to defeat, with it being easy to take out the baby human’s eyes making it a lot easier to attack, but the story relevance and threatening aura are part of why it sticks out so much.
1Destroyer Louis
End Of Evangelion, Is That You?
There are quite a few different encounters with Louis throughout the story of Metaphor: ReFantazio, with the battle on the roof of the opera house in Altabury being a highlight, but he truly reaches new heights with the final phase of the last boss fight of the game.
Growing more and more corrupted by the melancholia he attempts to wield, after breaking the three powerful masks he hides under, his manic deformed face is revealed, looking like an evil bishounen biblically-accurate angel. He’s an obvious challenge, but even if you manage to get into a pattern of chipping down his health, in his final turns he’ll buff himself with even more actions per turn to verify he doesn’t go down without a fight.
