There are many different types of monsters and villains in video games, from people who are pure spite and aggression to villains who are misunderstood. But there is another type of antagonist, the ones who are power-hungry and willing to go to any lengths to get it.
Arguably, those villains are one of the most frightening to encounter, since they will do anything to get their way. Some go as far as making themselves into literal monsters to achieve their goal. That is what this article is about; the devastating and terrifying moments of when video game characters have become so corrupted that they turn themselves into monsters.
From the gameBioshock, Frank Fontaine is a con man and a criminal, with less-than-ethical business ideas. He dabbles in all sorts of things to smuggle contraband or to get a payday, doing just about anything for profit. He is truly despicable.
Eventually, you will have to face Frank Fontaine, but he isn’t in any ordinary form. He has injected himself with ADAM, which is a genetically altering substance. Now, an intimidating massive figure with super strength, he has become a literal nightmare and continues to change throughout the fight.
Captain Leon Ferris is the main antagonist ofThe Callisto Protocol. He was one of the senior officers in Blackwell Prison where Jacob Lee, the protagonist, was locked up after an unlucky crash on the dead moon of Callisto.
Toward the end of the game, Captain Ferris makes his final appearance, though he is noticeably bulkier and well, infected looking. He had merged himself with a certain strain of the Biophage, a life-devouring infection that has been rapidly mutating and changing people to be aggressive zombie-like creatures, to make himself more powerful, just as he always wanted.
William Afton, perhaps better known as Purple Guy, is the main antagonist throughout theFive Nights at Freddy’sgames. You can slowly unravelthe devastating storyof the animatronics, the restaurant, and the crimes surrounding William Afton.
After the murder of multiple children during his selfish quest for immortality, but eventually, had to face the consequences. It did not go his way and became one with the suit in the most agonizing way.
The Joker, who is an insane supervillain and Batman’s arch-nemesis, is one of the main antagonists ofBatman: Arkham Asylum. During the game, Joker takes over Arkham Asylum, where some of Joker’s gang and other villains are being kept, and uses it to his advantage.
Eventually, it is revealed that Joker is funding the development of Titan, a chemical that results in inhuman muscle mass and super strength. Joker gets his hands on some and of course, injects himself, and becomes a hulking figure that Batman takes on.
Josh Washington was quite an interesting character inUntil Dawn. He had orchestrated many of the dangerous “pranks” that went on in the mountain with his friends. It’s certainly a form of revenge after his sisters died from a prank that was pulled on them.
It’s hard to say Josh is a monster purely because of how complex his character is and the reasoning behind his actions. But there’s no denying that when he was dragged through the mines and then possessed by the spirit of a Wendigo after eating human flesh, he wasn’t a monster at that point.
John Hancock is perhaps the one that will stand out the most on this list because even though his outward appearance is ghoulish, he didn’t change because he was power-hungry or enraged. It was because of an unfortunate struggle with addiction to chems like Jet.
John is the mayor ofGoodneighbor in the Commonwealthand he has quite a fascinating story and dialogue if you choose him to be your companion. There is a lot to discover about his character that is unique from the others on the list.
Jesse Williamson, better known as Carlos, is the leader of the Rippers who terrorizes the settlements inDays Gone. They are frightening to come across, as they are vicious and ruthless and will kill on site.
Carlos once was a part of Deacon’s biker gang, but after a mistake, he was kicked out and had his tattoos melted off by a torch. After the apocalypse, he essentially lost his mind, marring himself while doing an extreme amount of drugs with his followers. He became a terrifying scarred monster, leading others to do the same.
While Dr. Birkin was obsessed with the G-virus, it was ultimately his demise and his selfish actions caused the infection of Raccoon City and the violent cannibalistic outbreak.
Dr. Birkin had been a part of a research project, creating a dangerous bioweapon, which was admittedly his first downfall by association. But he became obsessed, and then, in a desperate attempt to save himself after some grave injuries, he injected himself with the G-Virus, even though he knew it was unfinished and not at all safe. Becoming one of thescarier creaturesyou’ll meet in Resident Evil 2.
