Although you’re able to go through every dungeon dive in Megaloot by playing the exact same characters, there’s something that’s a lot more fun about trying out the different ones and seeing all of their unique quirks. Some characters are a lot easier to utilize, while others are a lot more difficult and require you to think more carefully about the loot you decide to buy and keep.

Although, in theory, every single one of the ten playable characters can take you to the end of the dungeon, that’s not exactly the same as in practice. In thisindie game, some playable characters are simply better than others.

Active Set

Unchained, +25% adaptive attack

Riel is frustrating, notably because he is difficult to get through the early stages because his stats as a mage are relatively weak, and his associated loot type is incredibly hard to find. Best of luck trying to find an unchained piece of loot because they’re hard to come back and impossible to find in the early stages of the dungeon.

If you want a serious challenge, then Riel will give it to you, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll have a plethora of fun taking that challenge on. You will absolutely be coming to understand just whyMegaloot has earned its roguelite tag(aka, you’re going to be dying—a lot).

Blackthorn, +45% armor

Sid’s stats on the Megaloot starting page.

The one thing that you can really count on with Tyr is that Tyr is going to have an absurdly high armor count, and that’s specifically because Tyr doesn’t get any weapon sockets. You have to make do with rings and an amulet, and that’s it. It ends up being really difficult when you depend on the loot to treat you nicely.

It’s not an impossible feat to accomplish, but that doesn’t make Tyr any less difficult or frustrating to try and play. When your entire build hinges on the luck of the draw, it can make each run an absolute pain to get through (though it could end up being super rewarding… somehow).

Legacy

Jace looks like he should be some paladin type of tank who can take on all the forces of evil that the world could possibly throw at him, but he’s kind of… not. If your build is even slightly off, then Jace is absurdly easy to parry, meaning that even low-level enemies can just barrage him with different attacks.

As such, it’s best to try to build up his precision, even if that feels like a little bit of a waste regarding inventory and equipment space.

Vampiric, +25% max health

Fael’s stats on the Megaloot starting page.

There’s nothing inherently offensive about Elys’s character, but she’s a difficult one to play. One of her buffs, the “chaotic” option, applies random status effects, which can either prove itself to be amazing or an absolute headache and a half.

If you want a bit of a challenge, then sure, go for Elys—she walks the middle of the road pretty well, even if you might find yourself falling to the side just slightly more often than not. At the very least, she generally has pretty good health and is versatile with a weapon or magic (although magic is much preferred).

4

Mercenary, +25% physical attack

Sid is… an alright character. There’s nothing inherently wrong with him, and if you can build him right by getting lucky with the right loot, you can make an absolute tank. However, that’s the key point: you need to get the right loot with Sid.

He puts all of his strength into a singular attack (sans any pre-game buffs) and his skills are oriented toward boosting his physical attack. He fares better after floor 10 when you should have a decent build, which is a boon—you just need to get him there.

8

Darkness, +25% magic attack

Pyry is one of the first sorcerer characters in the lineup, but don’t discount them simply because they wield a wand instead of a sword. That plus 25 percent magic attack may not seem like much, but it makes all the difference once your attacks start getting stronger and stronger.

You just need to verify that you can keep this glass canon of a character safe until you can get to that point by carefullypicking and choosing which enemies you take down on each turn. As such, it’s best to invest your loot into boosting wisdom and breaking down armor-boosting items at the end of every floor.

5

Arcanum, +45% magic attack

Kinno is one of the last few characters that you can pick from in the lineup, but she’s a pretty good mage with some well-rounded stats and an orientation for elemental magic. Her plus 45 percent magic is a great boon, whether you’re in the early stages of the game or the latter stages.

You just need to ensure that she’s well-armored or has some good agility stats with the item breakdown at the end of every floor. You probably won’t see any armor items that she can equip for free until after floor five, however, so hang in tight until then.

Chromalure, +45% toxicity

Viran is one of the more versatile characters that you’re able to attempt to play as in Megaloot. Viran is capable of wielding both magic and weapon alike, which means that they can have a pretty versatile build that can change up as you need it to.

Of course, it’s difficult to actually get a solid grasp on how their mechanics work, but it’s not impossible. If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge, and you’d like to try magic (without fully committing to a magic-using character), then Viran is a great place to start.

Warrior, +25% combat

Fael is one of the more dangerous “hard hitter” characters. If you design all of his buffs and his loot into boosting his hits to make them as hard as possible, you can dominate the competition pretty quickly. Not to mention, he can wear some of the better gear, the warrior armor and loot, without taking up a type-slot.

This makes it easier to change weapons, amulets, and rings. Unfortunately, he’s not great at dodging, so you’re going to have to put your all into making him a tank.

Scout, +25% max energy

Fren may be pretty basic, but sometimes basic is good, and basic is all you need to get yourself to the end of the game. Fren has good dodge mechanics and is decently equipped to act as a tank if need be.

Although, depending on the buffs you pick before you start, you might just be able to slaughter all of your enemies before they can even touch you. Fren’s one of the more well-rounded playable characters in Megaloot, and that, by far, makes him one of the better ones for dungeon crawler beginnersand pros.
