Mechabellum, like all RTS games, is based around making the right decisions in all aspects. From choosing the right artillery to picking the perfect spot to place them, it’s a solid experience that forces you to make tough choices and live with the consequences. As such, you must select the ideal battle weapons, or “units,” to give you that slight edge in outmaneuvering the opponent.

With 25 units in the game, choosing the right ones for each round is often overwhelming, since you need to account for their purposes and the value they’d provide based on the current enemy position. Fortunately, some units are much more impactful than others, so recruiting them is always a plus, and there are ten you should absolutely prioritize.

10Steel Ball

Steel Balls are perhaps the strongest Light unit if you can fully upgrade them. Upon reaching Level Three, their lasers are absolutely lethal, decimating almost any type of mech or shield in their path.

Coupled with decent range and speed, the only thing a Steel Ball needs to do is get close to the opponent. Since they travel in clusters and attack from all sides, a Heavy or Giant bot with no backup is an easy target. Generally, it’s best to use these units with the Elite Specialist to purchase a Level Two Steel Ball directly from the store.

9Stormcaller

If your opponent decides to get greedy and puts several massive units on the field, the Stormcaller is a great response to that strategy. When stationed near the towers at the back of the arena, these mechs continuously shoot a barrage of missiles that do incredible damage.

Stormcallers are a nightmare for slow-moving mechs. They attack from a safe distance and a direct hit could kill almost anything weaker than a War Factory. However, these units are extremely volatile, as they’re basically a sitting duck for any fast-paced mech, like the dozens of swarming Light Bots.

8Sabertooth

Supporting long-range Light Bots like Fangs is crucial, and a reliable Sabertooth can effortlessly fill that role. At just 200 Cost, these units serve as both long-range attackers and protective barriers, thanks to their built-in Missile Interceptors. They can essentially nullify enemy Stormcallers and Sentry Missiles, freeing your Light Bots to engage elsewhere.

In Swarm battles, a Sabertooth can be the deciding factor in which side holds out longer. Its low cost makes it a top-tier economic choice, especially against opponents with multiple missile-based weapons.

As a Rare unit, you can only recruit Sabertooth from pre-round item picks.

7Phoenix

Aerial aggression is among the most effective anti-picks in Mechabellum, and when you don’t have the Supplies to get an Overlord, a Phoenix serves as a strong substitute. Its high DPS and extended range can rival several Medium, Heavy, and Giant units, and that’s not even mentioning how Phoenix is completely immune to most of them.

The best way to utilize a Phoenix group is to capitalize on their range and place them somewhere isolated. They can then attack units without any repercussions and move towards the enemy tower, and once they’ve destroyed the tower, they can now flank enemies and sweeten your victory.

6Fire Badger

Crawlers are a serious threat at any stage of the game. So, if you don’t want to use a subpar Arclight that may or may not win, the Fire Badger is a great pick that guarantees victory.

The Fire Badgers' flamethrowers are a great counter against any Light swarm, and they can even pose a threat to Medium and Heavy units if they can successfully flank them. Furthermore, the low price makes them an attractive choice if you need something quick and definite for the field.

Fire Badgers are rare to come by, since you only get them through pre-round item picks or using the Fire Badger Specialist as your starter.

5Fortress

The Fortress' immense DPS and HP make it arguably the best counter-pick for any Medium unit in Mechabellum. Its built-in defense can shield against flame-throwing mechs, acids, EMPs, and several other sneaky unit upgrades. Furthermore, its Anti-Air technology can block a powerful Pheonix entirely.

Being able to dominate a powerful and match-disrupting category like medium units is already a massive edge, but the sheer versatility a Fortress offers is the main reason it’s a solid all-around option. It’s the prime strategy to use against top-performing units, like Overlord, which support themselves using medium mechs like Sledgehammer and Typhoon.

4Vulcan

If you’re in a position where you’re getting overwhelmed by those pesky Light Bots, a Vulcan can easily solve that issue. Being set up as a strong late-game unit, its flamethrower can eliminate dozens of Crawlers, Fangs, Mustangs, and others in a snap. In most cases, the Vulcan’s strong defense makes it a far better option than its other flame-throwing alternative, the Fire Badger.

Like any close-range unit, Vulcan needs appropriate protection from enemies that can snipe you from afar. Once you establish that protection and pair the Vulcan with another melee-oriented unit like Rhino to tackle heavier enemies resistant to the flamethrower, you have an unstoppable combo that’ll go a long way.

3Overlord

Aerial units already have the advantage of being immune to several ground-based bots. However, when you add a colossal DPS and incredible range to that immunity, you get Overlord, the strongest Giant unit in Mechabellum. This artillery piece can single-handedly dominate an entire section of the map, and thanks to its range, it can beat almost any other mech in a 1v1 scenario.

Besides its hefty cost, the only major downside is the Overlord getting distracted by weaker Light Bots like Fangs and Mustangs. However, you can easily fix this by pairing the unit with a strong ground-based mech, like a Rhino, Fire Badger, or Vulcan.

2War Factory

When looking at the raw defense, the War Factory’s HP, being three times bigger than the second-bulkiest unit in the game, is truly something to behold. Its Missile Interceptor can stop almost any incoming projectiles, and upon upgrading this beastly machine, you can summon units on the battlefield, adding more firepower to your side.

It’s also worth noting that the War Factory causes the highest Core Damage than any other unit so far, which is fairly impressive. While its summoned units don’t deal any additional Core Damage, they don’t diminish the Factory’s base DPS, which rivals several heavy-hitting units like the Overlord.

1Crawler

One of the most common things players do in Mechabellum is place a shield directly on their tower to avoid long-range assault. To combat this tactic, the Crawler stands uncontested as having the best tools to destroy the enemy’s towers. Despite having a low Cost and no aerial defense, these units completely bypass any shield in their way, and once they reach a tower or any enemy unit, they’ll shred it to pieces in mere moments.

Their subpar range and defense do mean you need to support them with Sentry Missiles and other units, like the Stormcaller. Still, when it comes to excelling in a single aspect, the Crawler is, by far, the best thing you can get if you can set it up properly.
