Once you have worked your way through the east side ofSilent Hill 2’s South Vale, you will be left wandering the empty halls of the Wood Side Apartments. This is the first major area of the game you will encounter. It has three floors, multiple keys to locate, and at the center of it all, it provides a unique puzzle.
This guide will take you through this massive apartment building, point you in the direction of every item there is to collect, and help you work your way through the horrifying halls of this awful apartment building.
The Lobby Of The Wood Side Apartments
Once you enter the Wood Side apartments, you will find yourself in the lobby. Dead ahead, on the bulletin board,you should see the map. Go grab it. Now, hop over the desk and into the reception area. In the room behind the receptionist’s desk, you’ll findHandgun Ammoas well as an object covered by a dust cloth. Remove the cloth to unveil the core puzzle (not that you’ll be able to do anything with it yet). Save your game, and venture out.
There is aHealth Drinkunder the staircase to the left of the reception desk, as well as the Administration Note in the same general area. To the right of the reception desk you’ll findHandgun Ammoin the storage room (it is right next to apartment 105 on the map).
Head up the stairs, go to the top floor to get some morehandgun ammo. Go to the second floor and enter Apartment 202. There is aflashlighthere. Grab it. Once you do, you will have to fight a pair of conjoined sentient legs - AKA the Mannequin. After you kill it, search the apartment to find theChute Courtyard Keyin the nightstand and aHealth Drinkin the kitchen.
Head back down to the first floor, the Chute Courtyard Key will unlock the door to the right of the reception desk. In the courtyard, wheel the laundry bin under the open window. Jump up and in through the window to enter apartment 112. The side room to your left hasHandgun Ammo.Enter the hallway, and you will fight a Creeper.Head to room 109.
There is a Mannequin hiding in this apartment. They can appear in the corner of the bedroom, lying in wait beside the entrance to the livingroom, or under the kitchen table. So, watch out.
After you defeat the Mannequin, grab theHandgun Ammofrom the closet. Now, head down the hallway, you will see a key lying on the floor, across from the bars. attempt to pick it up (it will get kicked away, but you need to reach for it anyway). Unlock the nearby door and you will be back in the courtyard. Head back to the reception area. The door leading to the east wing of the building will now be open, as will the gate that was blocking off the west wing. There are two Lying Figures. However, if you approach carefully, you can draw one of them away from the other.
Separating these Lying Figures by drawing on of them out to the lobby, and fighting them one-on-one, is the safe bet. Also, they are trickier to deal with when you are confined in a hallway, so you’ll be killing two birds with one stone by drawing one of them out.
It is possible that one of the Lying Figures from the hallway will enter the apartment as you battle the Mannequin. So, watch out.
Search the apartments in this area. Room 102 has aHealth Drinkin the bedroom. Follow the hallway to the end, and you will now be on the other side of those bars. Grab the2F Hallway Key.Enter apartment 107. There is aHealth Drinkin the bedroom. Now, head back. Head down the hallway, and enter Apartment 108. Here, you’ll find a wardrobe with two hands. Turn the one on the left and it will drop theGolden Apple Handle.
Getting The Handgun
There are two Creepers in Apartment 106. So, be careful, and approach the living area cautiously. There isHandgun Ammoin the cabinet in the living room.
Enter apartment 203.Enter through the hole in the wall, and enter Apartment 207. Here you’ll findHandgun Ammoin the kitchen, beside the TV in the living room, and in the closet. Which is convenient, asthe handgun itself is sitting in a grocery cart in the middle of the living room.
Once you have the Handgun, head back the way you came. Once you reenter Apartment 203, things will have changed. There is now a body under a blanket positioned in front of the TV screen. You’ll find that theApartment 212 Keyis sitting on an end table nearby.
Go into Apartment 212. There is aHealth Drinkin the kitchen. Head onto the balcony from the living room and head left. There is a Mannequin in the next room, so prepare to be jumped. Once you kill the Mannequin, get theHandgun Ammofrom the refrigerator.
Now, clear out the two Lying Figures in the hall. One will likely slither in your direction when you get close to the corner. In Apartment 207 you will find moreHandgun Ammoin the kitchenandin the living room. There is a Lying Figure in the living room and a Mannequin hiding in the bedroom next to it.
Enter Apartment 208 and get theHandgun Ammofrom the kitchen. Head over to the wardrobe andplace the Golden Apple into the empty hand. This will reveal of peephole into the room beside this one. Now, push the wardrobe to the side, and enter into the hidden room.
The Hidden Room Puzzle - The First Coin
You will now be locked inside the room. On the wall is a riddle that reads…
Right where the rooftops pierce the through the night
Left are homebound footprints with no owner in sight
But has he found home, oh, please pray tell
Or a river of memories leading right to his hell
So, you need to scan the walls and find the images that correspond with the riddle. It is always an image of three roofs (13), a house with footprints (7), and a river (11). Making the combination right to 13, left to 7, and right to 11. While the placement of the pictures changes depending on the difficulty, the combination is always the same.
you may now open the safe and get the coin and the key. Use that key to leave this room. Enter apartment 205, there are three creepers in here, so be careful. There isHandgun Ammoin the kitchen and aHealth Drinkin the first aid kit near the piled-up boxes. On the chair in the middle of the room is the2F Small Staircase Key.
The Second Coin
Now head to the staircase on the north end of the the second floor and use the key to enter inside. Head to thebottomof the stairs and get theHandgun Ammo. Enter apartment 116, and you’ll find moreHandgun Ammoin the kitchen. You’ll encounter Eddie here. He’s having a rough time. After talking to Eddie, hop out the window. There is another one of those coins sitting in a carriage in the middle of the pool. However, you will need to deal with those three Lying Figures. Your best best is to run past them, grab the coin, and run away.
Go to the third floor, and head to the end of the hallway, you’ll find an armchair with someHandgun Ammositting on it. Enter into apartment 311 through the hole in the wall, and there will be two Mannequins in this apartment. One will be waiting to ambush you. Once you kill them, look for the other, they will either be in the kitchen or the bedroom. Grab theHealth Drinkfrom the work bench and enter into apartment 309 from the hole in the wall.
There is another Mannequin hiding in this apartment as well. Once you kill them, collect theHandgun Ammofrom the drawer in the kitchen. Exit apartment 309 through the hole in the wall, then take a right and enter apartment 310 at the end of the hall. There is a strange note andHandgun Ammoin the first aid kit. Now head down the hallway and enter into the other half of 310. There is one Mannequin hiding in the apartment, and another on the balcony. If you get too close to the balcony, the other will join the fight.
Once you kill both of the Mannequins in 310, use the balcony to reach 312. There is another Mannequin in here that will want to play hide and go seek. Once you kill them, search the apartment to find a health drink in the room with the big ladder. Enter another balcony from the room with the giant blood smear on the ground and get theSyringe.
The Final Coin
Now, crawl through the small vent, and you’ll enter the laundry room. Grab the Handgun Ammo and the box of juice. Drop the box of juice down the shoot to clear the debris.You’ll now be able to go back down to the courtyard and claim the final coin,which you can use to solve the reception area puzzle.
The goal of this puzzle is to decipher the riddle and place the coins in their correct spots. However, the riddle, and the coin placement, change dramatically depending on the puzzle difficulty you choose at the beginning of the game.For all the answers to this puzzle, follow our guide here.
Once you have completed the puzzle, you will get the key to apartment 201. There is aHealth Drinkin the bathroom. Check the desk, and a cutscene will play out. Collect thehandkerchieffrom the ground. Now all you need to do is follow Pyramid Head through the door, and you will enter into the next section of the game.
