The Casting of Frank Stoneis one of the first and deepest explorations of the lore ofDead by Daylight, the multiplayer game where four player-controlled survivors escape a player-controlled killer. While the game already has quite a bit of lore, it isn’t normally delved into in the main game.

This is where The Casting of Frank Stone fills that gap, although it does so by adding more questions than answers, particularly if you only experience one playthrough. With its time-bending narrative and otherworldly killer, it can be hard to wrap your head around certain concepts, but the answers are there for those that look for them.

The Multiple Timelines

During your time with the game, you’ll explore three different time periods:1963, 1980 and 2024.

Some charactersappear in more than onetime period, while othersare descendants of previously seen characters, but it seems like the story takes place in one straight line.

This, however, isn’t true; the different years you play through aren’t continuations of each other, butdifferent universes altogether. This is why you can take certain choices in the past and have them seemingly have no effect in the future.

Sam Green

The easiest way to understand this concept is with Sam Green, whoyou first took controlof in 1963 duringhis fateful encounter with Frank Stone. The main change you can make here iswhether the baby lives or dies, that baby being none other than Jaime Rivera.

If the baby dies,Jaime is still alive during the events of 1980, but the Sam Green present in 2024 willnot know who Jaime is.This shows that this Sam isthe same one we played as in 1963, but from a different universe than the versions of 1980 and 2024 we explore.

The Horologium

The Horologium isthe device that allows travel between universes, with several characters making use of it. The main use we see of this device is byan elder Augustine, as she takesa younger version of herselfout of the device.

Many players seem to mistakenly think thatAugustine is cloning herself somehow, but in realityshe’s recruiting herself from different other universesto keep the cycle going.

This means that, while the Augustine we first met might have been doing this cycle for the first time,it isn’t the first time the events take place.

The Entity

The Entity that appears at the end of the game isthe same one that controls the trials of Dead by Daylight, summoning the hunters and hunted to partake in eternal torment.

This godlike creature is reminiscent of lovecraftian horrors, its motives and reasoning essentially unknowable.

There are two organizations working around this Entity, the Imperriati and The Black Veil.

The Imperriati are trying toprevent the Entity from taking more people, Sam being the only member we meet, whilethe Black Veil are working for it, with all the different Augustines we see being a part of that organization.

The Ending

While you’re able to havemultiple variations of the ending, the events remain largely the same:Frank Stone is awoken, and the remaining survivors gather by a fire, awaiting the trials to begin.

This is not just a merereference to Dead by Daylight, but rather it shows howthe many characters of the multiplayer game ended up where they are.

While the Entity can simply revive the survivors, they still need to be somewhat resourceful, hence why they weren’t immediately taken by the Entity when the game first started.

They will go through the trials over and over, their memories wiped each time, untilthey are nothing but hopeless husks.

Frank Stone, on the other hand, was molded into being the perfect killer, since simple bloodlust wasn’t enough. He needed to go through an entire ritual, becoming a supernatural force of naturethat could stand side by side with Dead by Daylight’s most notorious killers.
