Onix’s journey in thePokemon TCGbegan at the series' onset, as this Kantonian Pokemon was one of the earliest Pokemon featured in any related media, not just the TCG. However, while many of the original 151 Pokemon also appeared in some ofthe most expensive vintage Pokemon sets, there’s no guarantee that an inclusion would mean their card is valuable.

While Onix is far from the strongest or most popular Pokemon, there’s no debating that it stokes the nostalgic embers that appeal to longtime lovers of Pokemon. Understandably, Onix needs some help from its friends and its favorite trainer to sustain its most valuable cards.

Given the age and rarity of these cards, onlythose with anestablished market price on TCGplayerare included.

However, sale prices differ depending on the card’s condition,so this market price is just a rough idea of the card’s value.

5Onix: Aquapolis (Common) – $2.08

A New Dawn

Aquapolis is an incredible vintage set full of valuable cardsto add to your collection, including this Onix art that features the rock snake Pokemon staring off into the distance. You may not regard Onix as contemplative, but it appears lost in thought as it gazes at a beautiful sunrise.

Given the card’s age and the difficulty of finding these cards in good condition, it should come as no surprise that most copies of this card are below near-mint(NM)quality.

The Onix from Gym Heroes in the Pokemon TCG.

A reverse holo version of this card commands about $19 in NM condition compared to the common at closer to two dollars; however, the reverse holo doesn’t have a market price due to its limited sales.

4Onix: McDonald’s 2019 (Promo) – $6.18

An Unexpected Pairing

When you think of McDonald’s, what better Pokemon to use for a crossover promotion than Onix? Jokes aside, while the pairing doesn’t make much sense without reading too far into things, Onix’s expression is aptly grim, considering the things it probably saw while inside a McDonald’s.

On the value side of things, this Onix doesn’t inspire excitement, though you may be happy to know it’s widely available in nearly any condition. Heavily played(HP)cards sell for $2.25, while moderately played(MP)copies can jump closer to the three-dollar mark. If you want a cleaner copy, you can turn your attention to lightly played(LP)and can expect to pay around $3.75, whileNM cards average around five dollars.

3Brock’s Onix: Gym Heroes (Rare) – $9.78

A Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Gym Heroes is an incredible set with a shockingly expensive roster of cards, though Brock’s Onix finds itself on the more affordable end of the spectrum. This is great news for fans of Brock or Onix, but sadly, this card’s odd, pixelated screenshot art style puts a damper on the party.

First edition cards from Gym Heroes will always be desirable, but luckily you don’t have to shell out a fortune for this Onix. MP copies set a fair standard of $4.15, while LP cards are priced slightly above, all hovering around seven dollars. If you have a few extra dollars to spend, you can pick up anNM copy of this card for below ten dollars, making it a bargain considering its rarity.

2Onix: Base Set First Edition (Common) – $14.43

A Classic Kantonian Card

Shadowless and first edition copiesare themost valuable versions of the beloved base set, with even common cards like Onix commanding close to $15 for a non-holo. This Onix art is easily the most recognizable TCG art of this Pokemon, as we can appreciate Onix’s entire snake-like form on a sandy background.

While some cards from these vintage sets are difficult to find, Onix is usually well-represented among listings on TCGplayer, though certain versions might take time to locate.

Damaged copies set the minimum for this Onix, starting at $3.15, while HP copies sell for as much as $5.40 in some cases. MP and LP copies intermingle, with prices ranging from as little as $5.92 to as much as $14.99. Strangely,NMcopies alsohover around $14, though they can soar to $17.99if the card in question is particularly clean.

1Onix: Southern Islands (Promo) – $14.53

A Day In The Sun

The Southern Islands Onix claims the crown as the most valuable Onix card ever thanks to some much-appreciated help from friends like Venonat, Pidgeot, and Dragonite in the background. This bright and beautiful sunny day on a tropical island portraysa beautiful moment of fun for these jubilant Pokemon.

They deserve to celebrate this Onix as the most valuable of all time, though it barely exceeds the value of its Base Set peer. Even a damaged copy of this card can sell for $6.75, while NM copies are usually around $15 at the upper end of the spectrum. As one of the best promo sets ever, this card from Southern Islands is likely to remain Onix’s most valuable card.
