With plenty of valuable vintage boxes to collect, thePokemon TCG’sEX era boasts fantastic expansion sets, including the aptly named Dragon set. Commonly referred to as EX Dragon for specificity, this set contains plenty of Dragon-type Pokemon to collect, along with others whoonly became Dragons via Mega Evolutions, years after this set’s release.
While there are plenty of expected inclusions among the top cards from EX Dragon, a few unusual surprises are waiting, including Pokemon who aren’t directly linked to the Dragon typing. Luckily, whichever Pokemon you prefer, the artwork in this set is extravagant, featuring dramatic backdrops bespeckled with stunning holo blotches.
Cards are ordered according to theirTCGPlayerMarket Price, which you might pay on average for a copy of the cards below.
Given the age and rarity of certain cards, onlythose with anestablished market price on TCGplayerare included.
However, sale prices differ depending on the card’s condition,so this market price is just a rough idea of the card’s value.
10Kingdra Ex (Ultra Rare) – $45.61
Big Dragon Energy
Kingdra is one of the OG Dragon Pokemon, as it appeared on Claire’s team as her ace Pokemon during the eighth gym battle in Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. This ferocious interpretation of the Dragon and Water-type Pokemon gives it one of Kingdra’s most intimidating depictions.
This card’s price ranges from $12.95 for a damaged copy up to about$45 for a near-mint copy (NM).If you’re looking for a more modestly priced option, lightly played(LP)cards drop to about $30, while moderately played(MP)cards sell for roughly $25 on average. Bargain hunters might want to opt for heavily played(HP)instead, as those copies are only about $15.
9Golem Ex (Ultra Rare) – $48.17
Strong As A Rock
Golem makes a surprise appearance in EX Dragon, as there’s nothing that links this Pokemon to the Dragon typing, except for its incredible sturdiness and power that mimics a dragon’s.
Thematic relevance aside, Golem is an original Pokemon from Kanto, which always comes with a nostalgia tax.
Golem has seen a steady increase since 2023, rising out of the low $30 range on its way to its current market price. It passed the $40 mark in late April 2024 and hasn’t looked back since, though sales indicate thatthis card might struggle to break the $50 ceiling.
8Ampharos Ex (Ultra Rare) – $50.73
A Perfect Prediction
Unlike Golem, Ampharos has made huge strides by breaking the $50 barrier, as it also delivers a better thematic tie-in to this set than Golem. While Ampharos was originally only an Electric-type, it gained a Dragon type and received a makeover via its Mega Evolution.
Whoever decided to feature Ampharos as an ex-Pokemon in this set made an incredibly good call.
Ampharos has seen plenty of ups and downs in recent years, falling through the floor from above the $52 mark down to roughly $48 in mid-2024, rebounding to the 50s in the latter months of the year. The support andinstant rally from Ampharos are great signsof the stability of this card’s price.
7Charmeleon (Secret Rare) – $82.23
Middle Child Syndrome
Charmeleon always struggles to stand out from its kin, Charmander and Charizard, as its inability to distinguish itself as particularly cute or tough sees it fall to the third spot in the sibling rivalry.
Charmeleon’s face is difficult to see in this card’s art, making it even harder to appreciate this Pokemon’s design.
Despite some knocks against its design, Charmeleon is one of the hardest cards to acquire from this set, thoughNMcopies seem to be dipping fromhighs of $88 down to about $70.However, LP copies are a great bargain for below $50 in most cases.
6Charmander (Secret Rare) – $95.41
A Pleasant Surprise
Charmander finds a home among the best cards in EX Dragon, even though this Pokemon never receives aDragon typingitself, as onlyCharizard can Mega Evolve to gain it.However, Charmander doesn’t need a strong type to show off how adorable this depiction is.
This card’s value continues to climb at the top end of the range, with NM cards jumping from about $90 in late 2023 to about $95 or more in late 2024. The smallshift in value doesn’t guarantee a continued upward trend, but Charmander’s popularity is likely to give it a push.
5Latias Ex (Ultra Rare) – $123.94
Settling Again
Latias launches us until the triple digits with one of its best cards ever, boasting a beautiful cosmic background to complement the Eon’s Pokemon simple red and white color palette.
While this Legendary Dragon-type Pokemon leapfrogs Charmander’s price by a sizable margin, it loses the sibling rivalry to its twin, Latios.
This card’s NM value continues to soarinto the stratosphere, as it ended 2023 on a low note, settling just above the $90 plateau. However, by the end of 2024, this card has climbed to almost $130, as vintage cards continue to gain value over time.
4Latios Ex (Ultra Rare) – $139.99
The Favored Twin
Much like his sister,Latios flaunts one of its most valuable cardswith this gorgeous Ultra Rare with an impressive view of the Pokemon.
Unfortunately, it’s extremely challenging to locate an NM copy of this card, as it’s typically available in MP condition or worse. However, even without a recent NM sale for reference,LP copies reached a high of over $100,leaving plenty of room for an NM copy to exceed the estimated market price.
3Dragonite Ex (Ultra Rare) – $145.50
Standing Tall
Dragonite’s place among the best pseudo-legendary Pokemon is cemented, assome of its most expensive cardscontinue to rise over time. However, even with its triumphant pose and sky-high value, Dragonite has to settle for third place in EX Dragon.
Sales of this Dragonite range from about $40 for damaged copies to$175 for the cleanest NM cards. However, you may secure a discount from the market price if you settle for an LP card, though they can still command up to $150.
2Rayquaza Ex (Ultra Rare) – $249.77
The Top Natural Dragon
Rayquaza boasts the most expensive card for a Dragon-type Pokemon in this set of the same name, asthis valuable Rayquaza cardstands out as one of the Legendary’s most stunning depictions.
As you might expect,NM copiesaren’t easy to come by, with some sales coming in at just shy of the$250mark, whileLP cards can be bought for roughly half that price.Expect to pay around $120 for an LP, with more limited options in worse conditions.
1Charizard (Secret Rare) – $268.76
Rising With The Flames
Charizard claims another top spot, as this Pokemon is no stranger to being named the top chase cards inPokemon TCG sets like Shining Fates, the Base Set, and more. This illustration isn’t nearly as nice on a screen as it is in person, but the fiery colors still stand out from the rest.
This card is easily the hardest to come by, with only five recent sales on TCGplayer, three of which were for damaged copies. The two other copies were inLP condition, selling for $260 and $300,leaving even more room for this card to rise in price once an NM card sells.
