Mega Charizard is an interesting Mega Form because technically there are two different versions of the same Pokemon. In the game, what makes this difference is which Mega Stone you give it. This card showcases Charizard’s Y form.
This particular printing was released in thePokemon XY Evolutions set. It has many similar printings in other sets, but this one has a few key differences. For starters, the Weakness and Retreat Cost are directly above and below each other. The EX Rule Box is a perfect rectangle instead of having tilted sides. The red coloring is also paler than other printings.

Fancy Metallic Boxes
When similar Pokemon cards are released in separate sets, it becomes hard to keep track of them. Mega Charizard EX is also in the Pokemon XY Flashfire set, but it has some key differences that give it a different value. This one is an ultra rare printing.
These differences include the border to the Rule Boxes. Rather than being a perfect box, these have a metallic border to them with the sides resembling a parallelogram. The Rule Box for the Mega Evolution rules also has the Mega Evolution symbol on it. You will also notice that the Weakness and Retreat Cost are no longer aligned.

A Larger Than Life Dragon
One of the biggest gripes about Charizard is that, despite looking like a Dragon, it is not a Dragon. Charizard’s Mega Evolution into its X form fixes this by adding the Dragon-typing and giving it a completely refreshing color palette.
This particular version of Mega Charizard is a special Promo that appeared in select boxes during the XY era of the TCG. It is not useable in an actual tournament but does make an excellent display. Since it is a Promo, there are higher chances that you have one tucked away in storage if you made it a habit of collecting boxes. Never underestimate an oversize card’s value.

Alternate Art Cards Are Special
If you thought every version of Mega Charizard would be a reprinting of the same art, then guess again. Mega Charizard EX’s Y Form has an alternate art. This version of the card is an ultra-rare in the XY Evolutions set. It still has that devastating Crimson Dive move and features all the same formatting as the standard version.
The more notable difference is the art, which has golden borders and a much more regal appearance. Charizard is also standing in a different position, which makes it easier to see the Pokemon’s full body rather than just the head.

A Special Printing With New Moves
Mega Charizard EX has a third completely different card that was released in theGenerations set of the Pokemon TCG. It has a different card art than the other Mega Charizard X. Instead of being a Dragon, this one is a Fire-type.
Mega Charizard EX also has a different attack called Heat Typhoon. It does a base damage of 100 and gains an additional 50 damage each time you flip a coin that lands on heads. Because there is no cap to how many coins you can flip, you can spam this card with as much Fire Energy as you want and keep flipping coins.

The Real M Charizard X
Mega Charizard EX is similar to the oversize card that came with certain bundles. However, this one comes in a legal size and is playable. This printing is the ultra rare version found in the Flashfire set and has specific differences from its more expensive counterpart.
Like the Mega Evolutions found in this set, Mega Charizard EX has a silver border around the rule boxes and the Mega Evolution logo. It also has that gorgeous card border that is being consumed by Charizard’s blue flames. This card is already expensive enough, but if yours looks a bit different, then it might just be worth a ton more.

Have You Struck Gold?
This is where many Pokemon TCG fans might make a mistake and accidentally sell off a card for less than it is worth. Mega Evolution Charizard EX’s Y form has a secret rare printing in the Flashfire set which is worth twice as much as its lower rarity counterpart.
If you look closely at this card, you will see that it has a golden border rather than the standard one. The Mega Evolution and Pokemon EX Rule Boxes also have this golden plating instead of the silver one. The Japanese text on the card art also has special textures and golden coloring.
