TheYu-Gi-Oh! TCG’sfreshly reprinted 2020 Retro Pack contains many classic cards from the Duel Monsters and GX era of the game. These cards are mostly for collectors, but there are some that can still be used in alternative formats, such as Goat or Edison.
There are also some cards in this pack that are still banned but are considered some of the most broken cards in the entire game. From cards that bring your Monsters back to life to some that let you send multiple cards to the grave, these are the ten best cards in the 2020 Retro Pack reprints.
10Scapegoat
Get Multiple Tokens
Scapegoat was originally printed in the Joey:Starter Deck. This card is pretty useful since it lets you spam out a bunch of tokens onto your field. The biggest downside to this is that you can’t Summon Monsters the turn you use this effect.
Luckily, this card is a Quick-Play Spell, meaning you can set it and then trigger it during your opponent’s turn. Then, when the turns switch again, you can use them for tributes or as material. This card may be slow for modern Yu-Gi-Oh! but it is also the reason Goat Format got its name.
9Sangan
Can Add Many Cards To Your Hand
Sangan originally got printed as a rare card inthe Metal Raiders set. In the original days of Yu-Gi-Oh!, this card had one of the best effects in the game. Just by being sent from the field to the grave, you can add any Monster with 1500 or less attack.
Despite being too slow for the modern game, the fact that this card didn’t need to be destroyed in battle to kick off its effect made it useful for putting together Exodia. During its first printing, it was also not once per turn.
8Blue-Eyes White Dragon
An Unstoppable Monster
While the Blue-Eyes White Dragon is considered one of the most unstoppable Monsters in the anime, the real game counterpart wasn’t as powerful. It requires two tributes to actually get out on the field, and it does nothing else but act as a giant beat stick.
With fresh support over the years, however,Blue-Eyes has managed to become a powerful archetypewith solid wins in past events. This makes it one of the best cards to pull in the set due to how it can still be used in the modern game.
7Upstart Goblin
Play With Smaller Decks
One card that originally had to be limited is Upstart Goblin. This classic card made it easier for players to run 37 card decks if they had three copies of it. All it does is let you draw a card at the expense of giving your opponent 1000 Life Points.
Life Points don’t mean much if you can get your opponent locked in a game-ending situation. In the modern game, Upstart Goblin sees great synergy with decks that focus on your opponent having more Life Points than you to kick off their effects.
6Mystical Space Typhoon
An Edison Staple
One staple of the Edison format is Mystical Space Typhoon. This card was originally printed in the Magic Ruler set of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG and continued to pull its weight for multiple formats. This card is simple to use. It can destroy a Spell or Trap card on the field.
This card has been used as a way to get rid of floodgates and other continuous Spells or Traps. It can also be used to get rid of face-down cards before they can become a threat. Before banishing cards became more convenient, this was the go-to choice of removal.
5Painful Choice
Filling The Graveyard
One of the best banned cardsis Painful Choice. This card lets you select five cards from your deck and show them to your opponent. Your opponent chooses one of them to add to your hand while the rest get sent to the grave.
This Spell could easily get multiple cards in the grave for setup, so it was banned. However, it is still considered one of the best cards in the set, since reprintings are hard to come by if it ever gets unbanned.
4Exodia The Forbidden One
An Alternate Win Condition
While all five cards are important for the alternate win, having a copy of Exodia The Forbidden One is essential for any fan of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. you may use them for Exodia decks that try to gather all five of the pieces together.
With fresh support inThe Infinite Forbidden set, Exodia pieces have even more uses in the modern game, making them great hits if you happen to find them in the packs. They will allow you to use cards such as The Unstoppable Exodia Incarnate.
3Monster Reborn
A Free Body On The Board
Monster Reborn is both an iconic card from the Duel Monsters era and a useful one. This card has had its time on the ban list and is currently limited to one copy per deck. This Spell brings back one Monster from either player’s graveyard as long as it was Summoned successfully.
Monster Reborn is a lot more complex than it seems. It can remove a card from your opponent’s grave while also getting material on your side of the field. It can also bring back Extra Deck Monsters without requiring you to get all the materials out a second time.
2Solemn Judgment
One Omni Negate
Trap-oriented decks love Solemn Judgment. This card is an omni negate that can stop Spells, Traps, Monster Summons, Monster Effects, and so much more. All it costs is half of your Life Points.
While this seems like a steep price, it is often worth it just to interrupt your opponent’s setup. You also won’t lose by using this card, since it will never truly get your Life Points down to zero. Once you are down to one Life Point, the card becomes free to use.
1Raigeki
Destroy All Your Opponent’s Monsters
One of the best cards in this reprint is good old Raigeki. This is one card that made it off the Ban List due to the modern game having more ways to interrupt it. However, it is still a powerful card that can wipe your opponent’s entire setup if they can’t interact with it.
The only real downside is that more decks have cards with graveyard effects. This means destroying and sending them to the graveyard is one step in the right direction and not an instant win.
