Summary
One of 2024’s most pleasant surprises was the reveal that The Thing would be getting remastered for modern consoles. The 2002 survival horror game based on the movie of the same name was an absolute cult classic when it was released. Not only was it a solid video game experience, but the game was actually a sequel to the movie, making itmore than just some licensed IP cash grab, like Enter The Matrix.
The remaster was originally unveiled several months ago, and the game will launch across all platforms, includingPlayStation,NintendoandXbox. It’s being handled by Nightdive Studios, which has immense experience in bringing classics to the modern age,and the team is committed to fulfilling the developers' “original vision.”
In the leadup to its 2024 window, a new gameplay trailer has premiered, giving fans a first-hand look at just how much the game has been upgraded. For one, the graphics look nominally better, while still retaining that 2000s flair. And the gameplay looks just like it did back then, with some added enhancements built in.
Unfortunately, the trailer did not expand on the game’s intended 2024 launch window. With only a handful of months remaining, it feels like now-or-never when it comes to releasing the game.
Classics Are Making A Comeback
The Thing isn’t the only cult classic game getting the remaster treatment. Earlier this year,Tomba! was re-released via the Tomba! Special Edition package, helping bring the legendary platformer to the modern age. Beyond that, it was also revealed on Thursday that Croc would be getting remastered.Indeed, Croc Legend of the Gobbos is being enhanced for modern hardware.
Elsewhere,it was also announced that Tomb Raider would be getting another collection of classic titles. This time, the beloved (and maligned) Angel of Darkness will be making its way to this generationalongside The Last Revelation and Chronicles. In other words, if you’re a fan of classic games, particularly those with cult followings, then 2024 is truly your year.
