You may rememberThe Wolf Among Us, a beloved 2013 narrative adventure from the original iteration ofTelltale Games. It’s based on the Fables series of graphic novels by Bill Willingham and features Bigby Wolf (The Big Bad Wolf) as its protagonist. Telltale Games was ultimately forced to close its doors after releasing a plethora of half-baked games based on expensive licenses. The studio’s intellectual property was later purchased by investors who created a new studio using the Telltale name.
Let Me Tell You A Tale
Since the revival, Telltale has released two games, Batman: Shadows Edition and The Expanse: A Telltale Series. However, there’s no doubt what the most anticipated game from the ‘new’ Telltale is, The Wolf Among Us 2. If you consider both iterations of the sequel to be one cohesive cycle, then Wolf Among Us 2 has been in development since 2017. None of the original work on the title is being used by the new Telltale, which began its own iteration of the game in 2019. A decision was made last year to switch the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, further delaying release. The studio then laid off most of the team, which… isn’t great.
A new rumour recently began circulating, spread by a now-deleted account on Reddit named Fabulous_Abrocoma_41 (reported on byGlitched), that Telltale Games had run out of budget and would be forced to shelve The Wolf Among Us 2. The post read as follows, “I’ve heard from a source close to the development team at Telltale Games that The Wolf Among Us 2 is in serious trouble due to budget constraints … while the project hasn’t been officially cancelled yet, they’re at a critical point where they might have no choice but to shelve it.”
There was no evidence to back this claim up, but Telltale Games still gave a response to an inquiry byEurogamer. It reads, “As a rule, we don’t comment on rumours and unsubstantiated Reddit threads. But development on The Wolf Among Us 2 continues, and we’re excited to share more about the game with Telltale fans and our community when the time is right.”
Though the rumours turned out to be false, you probably wouldn’t blame anyone for believing them as the development of Wolf Among Us 2 has been fraught with setbacks, layoffs and delays. Will we ever get to see The Wolf Among Us 2, or is it just a fairytale?
