Summary

Until Dawn’s remaster has dropped to “Mixed” reviews onSteam, with negative reviews criticising the PSN requirements, different soundtrack, and poor optimisation.

Although Until Dawn is far and away the most popular game inSupermassive’s choice-based library,it’s one that many were surprised to see get a re-release. That trepidation towards an “unnecessary” remaster doesn’t seem to have faded much now the game is actually out,as many fans have pointed out that it’s surprisingly worse in a few key areas.

Since the game launched yesterday,Until Dawn fans have been criticising the remaster for looking worse than the original in a number of ways, as well as pointing out missing features, things that have been negatively changed, and a whole lot of other things. This negative reception has perhaps unsurprisingly spread to the game’s Steam page, which isn’t looking so hot right now.

Until Dawn Opens To Frosty “Mixed” Reviews On Steam

As pointed out by UnsafeBody on the Until Dawn subreddit, the Until Dawn remaster currently sits with a “Mixed” response over on Steam, with a lot of the reviews pointing out some of the game’s issues. One of the biggest issues that a lot of players have right now is one that will be familiar to Helldivers 2 players -the infamous PSN log-in requirement.

Despite not being an online game, Until Dawn requires aPlayStationNetwork account to log in, something that Steam players absolutely hate and have roasted pretty much every PlayStation game that’s come to the platform for requiring. Many of the negative reviews for Until Dawn so far have suggested that this is the main reason for annoyance, which doesn’t come as a surprise.

Beyond that, though, the reviews point out a number of issues with the remaster. Some of them are based on the content of the new release, such as the removal of “Oh Death” from the game, the changes in lighting, the strange new aspect ratio that comes from introducing black bars to the screen, and more. It seems that the complaints of the remaster “looking worse” than the original are being felt by PC players as well.

Until Dawn’s remaster does at least add a new ending that seems to be teasing a sequel of some kind. It’s rumoured that Firesprite might be the ones working on a potential second game, but we’ll have to wait to find out more.

Perhaps the biggest problem that Steam players have with Until Dawn, though, is its poor optimisation. Many of the reviews point out progression bugs, softlocks, crashes, and screen-tearing as consistent issues, suggesting that PC might not be the best place to play the re-release. Here’s hoping some of those issues get fixed soon.
