Summary
A discerning fan has spotted an unofficial design inWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, something that would be illegal to use in official tabletop play.
As spotted byRoyta15 and posted on Reddit, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 uses a design from athird-party conversion kit. It’s a regalia associated with the Thousand Sons of the Chaos Space Marines, but not one that Games Workshop is selling.
Games Workshop Doesn’t Like For-Sale Third-Party Mods
Saber Interactive has revealed in the past that they scanned every miniature they needed for Space Marine 2, which probably means that someone at the studio enjoys this particular third-party design. The thing is, Games Workshop has historically been very stringent about the use of third-party models, you may’t even use non-GW products at official Warhammer tabletop games.
It’s hard to imagine that a company that’s so protective over its intellectual property like Games Workshop would be pleased to find a third-party design in the most successful Warhammer game on Steam ever.
It’s not the first time third-party modifications have slipped through the cracks and appeared in officially licensed products. It’ll be interesting to see if the design remains in Space Marine 2, or ends up being removed by Saber.
Despite the success of Space Marine 2, Games Workshop hasn’t engaged in a lot of cross-promotion between the video game and tabletop 40,000. You can buy a miniature of Lieutenant Titus, but that’s about it,and even that miniature isn’t particularly high quality.
The success of Space Marine 2 has been encouraging to Saber Interactive, who are considering either anexpansion or potentially a full sequel. Either way, the studio intends to be “working on Space Marine content for a long time.”
